37 outlaws held in Kohat

KOHAT, Feb 27: Thirty-seven outlaws were arrested and arms and contraband were seized from their possession in an operation conducted in different areas of the district on Monday.

The outlaws were held from Mitha Khan, Ublan, Mian Garhi, Muhammadzai, Tappi, Jarma, Kharmarto, Tor Dhand, Lachi, Bilitang, Gumbat, Dhoda, Sheikhan, Ghulam Banda, Jungle Khel and KDA Town.

The arms seized included two hand grenades, 12 Kalashnikovs, four kalakovs, five rifles, 10 shotguns, 35 pistols, 25 chargers and four kilograms of heroin. The respective police stations registered cases against the accused and launched investigations.—Correspondent

Hashish seized

KARAK, Feb 27: Police claimed to have foiled an attempt to smuggle huge quantity of hashish to down country here on Monday.

Police officials said that the hashish was being smuggled to Punjab. They said that police were tipped off about the smuggling bid.

A truck loaded with domestic luggage was stopped at Nasak Baba checkpost and 271 kilograms of hashish were recovered from it, they added.

They said that a smuggler Mohammad Rasool, a resident of Kurram Agency, was also arrested on the occasion.

The truck bearing registration number JLT-2460 was taken into custody by officials of Teri police station. Officials said that the accused was smuggling hashish to Punjab via Gurguri. — Correspondent

Dispute claims life

PESHAWAR, Feb 27: A monitory dispute claimed life of a tribesman at Faqirabad area in Peshawar city on Monday.

According to the FIR, one Ayaz Khan told police that his father Anwar Khan of Salarzai Bajaur Agency was on way from Hashnagri that a man shot him dead near Itehad Colony canal.

“Though we have no enmity with anyone but my father had given some money to a shopkeeper Ruhullah of Landi Sarak (Charsadda Raod), who was not ready to return it,” he said and added the shopkeeper was responsible for the murder of his father.

Police said raids had been conducted for arrest of the accused but he was not present at home and workplace as well. However, a murder case against him was registered at the Faqirabad police station.—Bureau Report

Display centres

MANSEHRA, Feb 27: The election commission Mansehra has established 77 display centres in Oghi tehsil for registration and correction of voters.

The centres were established at girls and primary schools across the tehsil. In-charge of these centres were also imparted training.

Speaking at the training session election officer Zeeshan Khan said the centres would remain opened even on Sunday till March 21.

He said 450 display centres would be set up for 760,998 voters in Mansehra district, adding these centres would make corrections in unfinished voters lists, register the unregistered voters and exclude names of people expired  or wrongly included in the lists.—Correspondent

Teacher’s manhandling

LAKKI MARWAT, Feb 27: The local chapter of Sarhad College Teachers Association (Scta) has condemned the torturing and manhandling of a college principal by the students affiliated with the Pakhtuns Students Federation in Bannu.

At a meeting held in Government Postgraduate College Lakki on Monday with Scta’s local unit president Prof Mohammad Yousaf Khan in the chair, the college teachers said manhandling of their colleague in Bannu Postgraduate College by PkSF activists, a student wing of ruling ANP, was condemnable.

They also went hard on local administration for not initiating any action against the students involved in the act. They also demanded of the government to provide security of life and property to college teachers and punish the erring students.

They warned to boycott classes and launch a protest campaign if their demands were not accepted.—Correspondent

Two police officers sacked

PESHAWAR, Feb 27: A DSP and an inspector were dismissed from service on the charge of negligence in duty and dishonesty.

According to a statement issued here on Monday, the two officers -- DSP Zahir Gul and Inspector Nawab Ali of Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Peshawar -- were facing charges of dereliction in duty. After thorough inquiries the Provincial Police Officer Mohammad Akbar Khan Hoti ordered their dismissal from service.

In the order the IGP reiterated his pledge that reward and punishment in the police force will go hand in hand.—Bureau Report

Fuel surcharge protested

SWABI, Feb 27:  Electricity consumers of Yar Hussain on Monday staged a protest demonstration against the inclusion of fuel surcharge in the power bills. People of Yar Hussain and its suburbs gathered in Yar Hussain bazaar and blocked the road.

The protesters were chanting slogans against the Wapda, vowing that they would not deposit their bills till the withdrawal of the fuel surcharge.

They were led by a social worker, Wahid Said Bacha, who alleged that the government was responsible for the mess. He urged the opposition parties to create unity in their ranks and force the government to withdraw the fuel surcharge in power bills.

The angry protesters ended their agitation after they were assured by the officials of Wapda and district administration that they would air their grievances to federal the provincial officials.—Correspondent

Polio refusal cases

LAKKI MARWAT, Feb 27: A meeting presided over by DCO Nisar Ahmad on Monday devised a mechanism to make union council level polio eradication committees fully functional and accountable for poor coverage in anti-polio drives.

The meeting said that with activation of the committees the goal of immunising the targeted population could be achieved successfully.

The meeting was attended among others by EDO health Dr Abdul Ghaffar Wazir, officials of line departments and chairmen of union council polio eradication committees.

“Though refusal cases have been reduced in the previous polio eradication campaign but concerted efforts are need to bring them to zero level,” stressed DCO Nisar Ahmad. He called upon committees’ chairmen to realise their responsibilities and improve the coverage of children against polio in their respective union councils.—Correspondent
