KARACHI, Feb 20: A young labourer was shot dead and his friend wounded when they resisted a mugging attempt in Federal B Area on Monday, police said.

According to the area police, 20-year-old Juma Khan was returning home along with a friend, Abdul Basit, on a motorbike when they were intercepted by armed riders near the UBL Sports Complex in Federal B Area. Dawn

Yousuf Plaza SHO Inspector Ali Hasan told that the labourers were returning from work in Sohrab Goth. "According to Basit, the armed riders asked them for cash and cellphones. When they resisted, the muggers opened fire on them."

The bullets hit both Juma Khan and Basit and their assailants rode away without taking any valuables, said the area SHO, adding that they were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Juma Khan died during treatment.

A case (FIR 27/2012) was registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder), 324 (attempted murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code against unidentified assailants on a complaint of the wounded at the Yousuf Plaza police station.

Watchman shot dead

A watchman was shot dead in Muhammad Ali Society on Monday, police said.

They said that 50-year-old Badshah Khan, employed by a family for their security, was killed on Monday morning after he escorted his employer's children to the car parked outside their home.

"The children were going to school and as a matter of routine he was accompanying them from the courtyard to the car," said an official at the Bahadurabad police station. "As the children left for school, two men on a motorbike arrived there and after a brief chat with the victim fired a single shot that hit him in the chest. He died on the spot."

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

"A paternal cousin of the victim, Zar Muhammad, told the police that they hailed from Mardan and had some dispute within the family," said the official. "One of their cousins had lost his life in the same manner only two months ago and they suspected the same reason behind Badshah Khan's murder. However, the family did not nominate anyone in the FIR (71/2012) registered under Sections 302 and 34 of the PPC on a complaint of the victim's cousin, Zar Muhammad."
