Cartridges seized

KOHAT, Feb 19: A huge quantity of cartridges being smuggled from Darra Adam Khel to down country in a car was seized by police on Indus Highway here on Sunday.

The police also arrested four men who were transporting the consignment of prohibited-bore cartridges from the tribal area near the police checkpost at Toll Plaza of Kohat Tunnel.

The accused were identified as Noorz Wali, Azmatullah, Sakhi Zaman and Gul Laiq, all residents of Bannu district.

The team stopped a suspicious car number LZO-8083 near the checkpost for checking and recovered 7,000 cartridges of 7mm rifle.

The Riaz Shaheed police have registered a case and launched investigations. — Correspondent

Policeman shot dead

PESHAWAR, Feb19: Unknown persons on Sunday killed a police official deployed at Peshawar Central Prison located on Dalazak Road.

The slain police official was identified as Mohammad Iqbal. The Paharipura police have registered a case against unknown criminals.

Father of the killed police official told police that they have no enmity with anyone. — Bureau Report

Minorities to stage protest

LANDI KOTAL, Feb 19: Minorities from all the tribal areas will stage a protest sit-in at the parliament house in Islamabad on March 1 if their demands were not met by then.

Addressing a press conference at the press club here, chairman Christian community Khyber Agency Arshad Masih said that they would also approach the Supreme Court for the disqualification of minority members in the parliament as they had miserably failed to fulfil the demands of Fata minorities.

Elaborating his demands, Arshad Masih said that minorities had been living in different parts of Fata for over a century but they were not issued domicile of tribal areas.

He lamented that despite an increase in their population, minorities were not allowed to purchase private property in tribal areas nor could they build their own houses. — Correspondent

Muqam backs Hazara province

SWABI, Feb 19: Amir Muqam, provincial president of PML-Q, has said that he wanted both Hazara and Malakand to get provincial status because it would end a sense of deprivation among the people.

Mr Muqam visited the district to attend the marriage of one of his party leaders here on Sunday.Talking to media persons, he said: “I have been advocating for Hazara and Malakand as new provinces because I think it would end the sense of deprivation among the people of these two populated regions,” he said.

In reply to a question, he said that it was NRO which provided an opportunity to the PML-N and PPP leaders to come back to Pakistan and play their role in the politics of the country. — Correspondent

Swabi police lines

PESHAWAR, Feb 19: Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti on Sunday laid the foundation stone of Model Police Lines at Shah Mansoor Town in Swabi district which would be completed at an estimated cost of Rs46.3 million in two years.

Addressing the gathering after inauguration of the mega project, the chief minister said that construction of police lines was part of the police package meant to enhance its capacity.

Police lines, police stations and police posts are being constructed in the province under this package to counter crimes, he said.

The chief minister said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police had written a new history of chivalry and bravery while fighting the menace of terrorism and militancy in the province. — APP

Five hurt in road mishap

NOWSHERA, Feb 19: As many as five persons sustained injuries due to collision between a van and motorcar near Pabbi here on Sunday.

According to police, a motorcar on collided with a van on G.T. Road, as a result, five persons including woman sustained injuries who were rushed to Leady Reading Hospital, Peshawar. — APP

Polio vaccination

TIMERGARA, Feb 19: Religious scholars of the core group of National Research and Development Foundation (NRDF) here on Sunday urged people to vaccinate their children below five years against polio to make the country free of the crippling disease by the end of 2012.

In this connection, NRDF organised separate meetings at Shamshi Khan and Bajauro Talash areas. The elders and notables of the areas attended the meetings.

NRDF core group members Maulana Zahid Khan and Mufti Khalid Mehmood addressed the meetings at Bajauro and Shamshi Khan respectively.

They said that polio had been a major problem in the country.

They said that most of the countries overcame the disease but despite hectic efforts cases of polio were being detected in different parts of Pakistan.

“Islam does not oppose medical treatment to protect human beings from illness,” they said. — Correspondent
