KARACHI, Feb 14: A suspected bandit was killed and his accomplice was arrested following an encounter with police on main University Road near Bait-ul-Mukarram mosque on Tuesday, police said.

Aziz Bhatti SHO Kansan Dean said that a police patrol signalled two men riding a motorcycle on University Road to stop, but instead of pulling over, they opened fire on the police and tried to escape.

He said in an exchange of gunfire, a bullet hit one of the suspects and he died on the spot. His accomplice was arrested, he added.

The police claimed that the suspects were involved in robberies.

The deceased was identified as Nisar Kareem and his held accomplice was identified as Muhammad Ejaz, who hails from Khairpur.

Till late in the night, no case was registered at the Aziz Bhatti police station.

Butcher shot dead

A butcher was shot dead in the Bhimpura area on Tuesday evening, police said.

A duty officer at the Risala police station said that Saleem Qureshi, 52, was sitting with his friend near Hari Masjid in the Bhimpura area when two armed men on a motorcycle targeted him and fled.

The victim was rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The police said that the victim sustained four bullet wounds and died on the spot.

The victim was a resident of New Karachi but used to live in the old city area, the police said, adding that the victim had no political or religious affiliation and he might have been killed owing to some personal enmity.

Two die in accident; trailer torched Two men riding a motorcycle were crushed to death by a fast-moving container-mounted trailer near Ayesha Manzil on Shahrah-i-Pakistan on Tuesday evening, police said.

Following the accident, enraged people set fire to the 16-wheeler trailer, bearing registration number TLL-402.

The police said that the victims could not be immediately identified. Hospital sources said that both the bodies were badly mutilated.

The area SHO claimed that the police arrested the driver and he was being shifted to the police station.

However, he did not disclose the name of the driver.
