A part of the ancient city of Ptolemais is pictured near the town of Ad Dirsiyah, about 100 km (62 miles) east of Benghazi, the second largest city in Libya.
The ancient city, founded approximately in 700 B.C, gained its name during the rule of the Ptolemaic empire.
It later became one of the capitals of the ancient Roman province of Creta et Cyrenaica, which today makes up the eastern coastal region of Libya. – Photos by Reuters

The date it is 700 BC is wrong. It was done after 332 BC after Alexander the Great. It began as a Greek city (not roman- that eventually was conquered by Romans. It was in fact part of Egypt and not of Libya. Ine of the famous Ptolemais was Cleopatra.
It is really a great thing to see the ancient ruins of Ptolemais Thanks The Daily Dawn..
Very nice pictures depicting the grandeur of what once was. Thanks
