Rehmarkable turnaround gives Pakistan series win

ABU DHABI: Left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman took a career best 6-25 to help Pakistan humble England by 72 runs in the second Test here on Saturday, to give them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

The 31-year-old twice took two wickets in successive overs to dent England’s chase after they were set a 145-run target on a weary fourth day Abu Dhabi Stadium pitch, bowling them out for 72 – their lowest against Pakistan in all Tests.

Rehman’s effort overshadowed Monty Panesar’s 6-62, in his first Test for 30 months, which finished Pakistan’s second innings at 214 in the morning.

This is England’s first series defeat after being unbeaten in their previous nine since their loss to the West Indies in early 2009 — a sequence which saw them rise to world number one in the Test rankings in August last year.

Pakistan won the first Test in Dubai by ten wickets. The third Test will also be played in Dubai from February 3.

Skipper Misbah-ul Haq said Pakistan wanted to make a match out of it after setting a tricky target.

“We knew that it would be difficult so we wanted to make a match out of it,” said Misbah, who has now won eight Tests with one defeat since taking over in October 2010.

“Our bowlers led by Rehman responded well and this is a great win.”Strauss showed his disappointment at the woeful effort.

“It’s pretty disappointing,” said Strauss, whose side last lost two Tests in a row against South Africa in July 2008.

“We must acknowledge how well Pakistan bowled and they thoroughly deserved the series win.”Rehman was ably assisted by off-spinners Saeed Ajmal (3-22) and Mohammad Hafeez (1-11) in a match which saw spinners dominate from the first day.

England lost their top four batsmen in the space of just 37 balls after an extra cautious start on a difficult pitch.

England captain Andrew Strauss topscored with 32 before he became one of Rehman’s victims during his maiden five-wicket haul.

In the penultimate over before tea, Rehman trapped Kevin Pietersen (one) and two balls later bowled Eoin Morgan (nought) to raise hopes of an unlikely win for Pakistan.

Sensing they could only upset their rivals through early wickets, Pakistan opened the bowling with off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez who responded well by catching Alastair Cook (seven) off his own bowling after England had edged cautiously to 21 by the 15th over.

Bell, promoted to number three after Jonathan Trott was unwell, was all at sea against master spinner Ajmal and his tentative push went through his legs to hit the stumps. He made only three.

Pietersen, who has been woefully out of form making just 16 runs in the series, managed one before Rehman trapped him and in the same over had the equally out of form Morgan bowled to dent England’s hopes of a victory.

Rehman then accounted for Trott (one) and Stuart Broad (nought) in the same over to leave England 7-68.

Ajmal dismissed Graeme Swann (nought) and Matt Prior (18) to complete his 100 Test wickets in his 19th match before Anderson was caught off Rehman to give Pakistan a sensational win.

England’s previous lowest against Pakistan was 130 — made on two occasions at The Oval in 1954 and Lahore in 1987.

Earlier, Pakistan lost their last six wickets with the addition of 89 runs after resuming at 125-4, with all hopes pinned on Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq.

Panesar took three of those wickets to finish with his eighth five-wicket haul in Tests.

Azhar Ali (68) and Asad Shafiq (43) added 88 for the fifth wicket before Panesar struck.

But England’s decision to take the second new ball as soon as it was due paid rich dividends as Anderson removed the dangerman Ali with a sharp rising delivery which caught the edge and was caught behind by Prior.

Broad then had Adnan Akmal (13) caught by Strauss in the slips off an ambitious drive in the next over as Pakistan wilted.

Rehman (10) and Ajmal (17) added an invaluable 36 for the eighth wicket before Panesar wrapped up the innings by taking the last two wickets.

Excellent performance by Pakistan. Outstanding Test cricket with the utmost of discipline and precision. Pakistan almost always has had the most talented team and hopefully from now on, they can be a bit more consistent. Watching my Indian team, it will be a long time before we can get our house in order. For now, Pakistan have the right people at the right places and will surely be a force to reckon with.

Wins like these always have very special meanings for expats like us but more importantly being a sports-lover what I like to say is winning & loosing is part of the game. The encouraging bit is the fact that sincere level of efforts r witnessed in the team. For that, we should be thankful to the judgement of 3 offenders which set now everyone else to focus hard on their core job. The Lesson: Punish every corrupt & crook hard & let the real beauty of the nation emerge shine &bright.

    Congrats Green Team…. well played.
Now the hard decision have to make by PCB
whom will be the coach. I think Mohsin Hasan Khan should be given the permanent position as a coach of Pakistan Cricket Team.

Dawn can start polling to get the reviews form the people of Pakistan about the coach.

Little request from PCB chairman Mr. Zaka Ashraf.
Please stick with the current team do not do drastic changes, just for the sake of favoritism.

OUTSTANDING rather more than OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE and VICTORY this is by our SHAHEENS. It has made us raise our heads with proud and glory in the cricketing world rather in whole of the world. Perhaps English media might b in struggle to nullify PAkistan because they have the nature of jealousy. I think they should b shameful of their past efforts to demoralize our glory and vigilance.

Many many congratulations to Pak Cricket. They have proven their mettle and that too outside their turf. This is indeed a remarkable achievement by all means. A captain cool performming himself, leading the team from the front and ably supported by youngsters and world class bowlers. This is above all a team effort as an individual can not always make you win games. I wish we support the team in times of crisis when things are not going in their way. I alway believe Pakistan gives a tough compettition to other teams in their own turf. We shoould all pray that criket returns to their country. Furthermore, criket ties between India and Pakistan resume soon so that criket lovers will enjoy the game in its true spirit..

      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 12:10 am

You must be kidding right? it not supposed to be spelled correctly. its a play on words saying that Rehman was remarkable.

    • Shakir says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 12:13 am

They are referring to Rehman’s performance, hence ‘Reh’markable.

    • Waseem says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 12:41 am

Rehmarkable, its a play on words because Abdur “REHman” destroyed the English Batsmen.

    • Hellsingfan says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 12:42 am

Its called a pun? Rehman = Rehmarkable ? The writer didn’t miss anything. You did :)

    • saad says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 1:00 am

they modified it after rehman brilliant bowling.
      Rehman+Remarkabley

      Rehmarkably.

    • Khawar says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 1:13 am

it is a play on words. Rehman = Rehmarkable. Pretty clever.

    • Adil says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 1:23 am

By “Rehmarkable” the author showed an important role played by Rehman ( Abdul ) in this win. It is just used as a metaphor and not a mistake.

    • Arif Khan says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 1:24 am

Ali…I think spelling is intentional to go with Abdur “Rehman’s” performance as he is the one who really turned it around.

    • Tariq says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 1:30 am

Yes, I’m surprised they misspelt “Rehmankable.”

    • Mohsin says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 1:44 am

Wow you are so smart!! Rehmarkable is intentionally spelled like that to highlight REhman !! Mr einstein.

    • ASK says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 1:44 am

I think they meant to merge ‘Rehman’ and ‘remarkable’.

    • vaqar says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 2:18 am

      @Ali

Strange that you did not understand tje jesding. This is as a tribute to Abdul Rehman – hence Rehmarkable

    • Shahrukh says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 2:22 am

It was a pun, a play on words to illustrate Rehman’s exceptional performance. No one is surprised about that. Pun has prevalent usage in today’s newspapers, especially the tabloids.

    • Syed Manzer says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 2:26 am

It is just a word play — combination of Rehman with remarkable.

    • salman says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 2:40 am

they probably combined rehman and remarkable into the title since rehman helped us win

    • Salma says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 2:42 am

      I think ‘rehmarkable’ is actually a reference to Rehman’s 6-25 being the match-winning performance…

    • Malik says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 3:15 am

The spelling are okay, the editor like to point out to the share of victory toward the lion’s share done by Rehman, and that is why Rehmarkable.

    • atta says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 3:34 am

it is a tribute to Abdul Rehman

    • Dr athar abbas says:

    • Syed says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 4:05 am

This is done on purpose to use Rehman together with the actual word my friend! Get it

    • Shakil says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 4:23 am

It is intentional to show that Rehman did it.

    • M R (Karachi) says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 4:40 am

The spelling is correct. You missed the point.

      Get it ! :-)

    • umar faruk says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 5:04 am

awake up bro, it is purposely written “rehmarkable” since Rehman took 6 wickets, remarkable show, it is combined word such as “rehmanable” “rehmarkable”, got it?

    • Ali says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 5:18 am

How is “rehmarkable” meant to be spelt? Loo

    • Atif says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 5:33 am

Rehmarkable honours Rehman’s six wickets, I suppose.

    • shahid says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 7:19 am

ali rehmarkable as in rehman & remarkable. its a clever play on the words.

    • Lodi says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 8:27 am

I guess “Rehmarkable” is for Rehman’s outstanding spell of bowling that embarrassed England

    • Mike says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 9:19 am

@ Ali I am sorry to say, you lack appreciation of innovation and creativity. The fusion of the word ‘remarkable’ with ‘Rehman’, no doubt explain a lot!!!

    • Rehan says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 9:39 am

I think they tried to combine rehman with remarkable to come up with rehmarkable. Or maybe I am giving them too much credit and it was just a typo?

    • Ahmed says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 10:23 am

“Rehmarkable” is a tribute to REHMAN hence the REH MARKABLE. You need to educate your self there buddy :-P

    • Kamal(India) says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 10:24 am

Bro the headline is a deliberate attempt to make it catchy to make it sync with Abdul Rehman as he was the chief architect of Pakistan’s win ;) Cheers.

    • Muhammad Daud Alam says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 11:03 am

You are right but I assume that they might have blended the names of “Rehman” and “Remarkable” together as “Rehmarkable”.

    • Mohammed Yahya says:
      January 29, 2012 (4 weeks ago) at 11:16 am

Pakistan was popular for pace bowlers now they have world class spinners. It is laudable Pakistan has tried youngsters over a period of time now and the results are infront of you unlike Indian Criket team who are contuing with old guns. If a word can define today’s performance I think it would ‘mesmerizing’. Pakistan took nothing for granted and took their heart out to perform. Although Pakistan don’t have a good tail but my words; were not they different in second innings? there was certainly a game plan, yes we witnessed some rash shots but in the end it was sheer guts and pride of lads which took pass them, they not played well but read the script to near perfection 10 17 12 doesn’t look big scores but were certainly better than 0 0 0 in first innings, I hope it is just a shine of bright side. Do I want to witness whole bright side? Oh definitely yes. Remember Rome was not build in a day, please do not expect them to beat everyone straight out there will be days when Pakistan team will require supporters to support them in their difficult times. Cherish the moment and may Mohsin Khan get permanent nod.

Well done ‘green shirts’ for the historic and
now famous victory against England at the
    Sheikh Zayed International Cricket Stadium
    in Abu Dhabi – U.A.E.

Maybe, Andrew Strauss and party has to
hire the services of Pakistan’s cricket legend
Javed Miandad a master of spin bowling, in
order to coach them how to play spinners?

At least Mushtaq Ahmad did his job in a befitting
manner since he coached England and its spinners
so well that Monty Panesar took six wickets in the
second inning of the test match.

The global cricket fraternity is just wondering
if England is really the top ICC ranked team
in the world? Let’s wait and see them in the
    up-coming ODI and Twenty20 matches.

No body talks about the intensive heat coupled
with high humidity amid salty and windy weather
conditions of UAE which take its toll on everybody in
the Middle East especially those operating in the
G.C.C. countries and the current England team
    is no exception to it.

I will not be surprised if England would eventually
face a complete and absolute ‘white-wash’ in UAE
against Misbah-ul-Haq and associates during their
    current series.

Fans of England cricket team must be grossly
disappointed whereas Pakistani fans led by their
global green-Pakistani flag cladding King of
cheerleaders ‘Sufi Jaleel’ must be very happy.

What a bowling performance by spin trio, mind blowing. Simply immaculate. Every team would have wished to have a bowling attack like this. This win is even more surprising than the previous one, as it required more efforts under pressure when you know only 144 is the odd total to defend. It is really a team effort as Every player of PAK team played his role in this emphatic win, both openers, asad, azhar, misbah, younis played well with bat, adnan impressive behind wickets and with bat as well, spin trio worth mentioning…
Gul was all time great. the duo of Khan (Younis & Junaid) were a bit off-colour, now its their turn to shine in 3rd game and handover a whitewash to “Veteran” English team. Congratulations Pakistan. Also Paying tribute to demolished Indians

I would also suggest Misbah to get in Umar Akmal in place of Tauseef Umar by asking Azhar to open the inning for Pakistan. This will give more variety to their batting as Tauseef seems to have become Swann bunny.May god bless misbah to bring more glory for the Pakistani and Its people.

Jaffar, you know Pakistan selector has courage to drop Mohammad Yousuf but in India team selectors stick to old players irrespective to their dismal performance, selectors in India more interested in Promotional Advertisement and 100 century of Tendulkar is more important than winning of the nation. So I am not sure whether they walking on similar track with Pakistan selector. So you can see the difference between results of two countries from sub continent.Good thing is that despite the political division of the 2 countries for Politicians who wish to exploit the country,we still follow Pakistan cricket and there are many supporters who cheer the cricket team irrespective of which side of border they belong.Congratulations to Pakistan team !!!!!!

It is such a morale booster as we the populace watch in horror what’s becoming of our dear homeland just as any patriot would if their country was in doldrums. I thank you for your words, sincerely. As for team India I believe losing one series doesn’t mean the end of the world nears. Look at what Australia came out of. Their bowlers were mostly unknown and all of a sudden the team clicked. Anything can happen with any team. Still on paper the Indian team hands down has the best batting line up. Whether a shuffle, change or retirings are needed remains to be seen. Whoever takes over will surely have big shoes to fill.
