Man shot dead

SWABI, Jan 21: One person was killed and four injured in two separate incidents here on Saturday, said the police.

In Mansafdar area, unidentified assailants shot dead a man during a robbery attempt at a mobile phone shop. The victim was identified as Farman Bacha, who was killed when he put up resistance. The killers escaped from the area. An FIR was registered in Kalu Khan police station while the police arrested two suspected people in this regard.

Meanwhile, a passenger coach and a police mobile van collided on Topi-Hamlet road near the Ghazi Barotha Dam on Saturday. As a result four persons were injured, who were taken to the Topi civil hospital.—Correspondent

Body found

CHARSADDA, Jan 21: The body of a young man, who was missing for the last three days, was found in the fields in the Sardheri village of Charsadda on Saturday. The victim was identified as Iftikhar.

Israr, a brother of the victim, told the police that Iftikhar had gone out of the house on a motorbike three days ago but he did not return.

After three days, the family was informed that the body of Iftikhar was lying in the fields near Sardheri village. Israr told the police that they had no enmity with anyone in the area. The police registered case and started investigation.—Correspondent

Two held with liquor

SWABI, Jan 21: The excise police on Saturday foiled a bid to smuggle liquor to the Punjab province and arrested two accused at Swabi interchange of the Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway.

Mohammad Raiz Khan, inspector of the excise police, told this correspondent that on a tip-off they signaled a van (LXF-7970) to stop but the driver sped up. The police gave a chase and stopped the vehicle near the Sheikh Dheri bus stop on Swabi-Jahangira road.

On search the police recovered 18 bottles of wine from secret sections of the van and arrested Amjid and Sajjid Khan, residents of Attock district. An FIR was registered against the accused, who were lodged in Chota Lahor city police station. —Correspondent

Complaints against police

PESHAWAR, Jan 21: A woman Rehmat Bibi and her sons, residents of Shaikhabad Peshawar, have accused Gulbahar police of harassing them and forcing them to resume the illegal activities as drugs peddlers and pay them the share.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Saturday they said they had abandoned the peddling of drugs four years ago and started selling vegetables but even then police used to conduct raids at their workplaces for unknown reasons.

“My sons are innocent and the local elders are witness to the fact that they do not indulge in negative activities and regularly go to their workplaces for selling vegetable but police are still after them,” she lamented.

The woman said on Jan 14 police came to her house, opened fire on the building and took away two relatives to the police station for unknown reasons.—Bureau Report

Polio eradication

KARAK, Jan 21: DCO Mohammad Zubair has stressed that integrated efforts need to be carried out by all segments of the society to eradicate the crippling disease of polio.

He was addressing a day-long seminar organised for the teachers of the district on Saturday by National Research Development Foundation (NRDF).

Mr Zubair said the teachers community could play a vital role in eradicating polio as they had direct interaction with the society.

The DCO said a polio case had been detected in Kohat which was a threat for the Karak district.

He stressed that those parents who had refused to administer polio drops to their children should be persuaded by the teachers.

Mr Zubair asked teachers to deliver five minuets lecture in the morning assembly highlighting the dangers of polio to create awareness about the crippling disease.—Correspondent
