Militants arrested

NOWSHERA, Jan 11: The district police officer has said that the Karachi police had arrested three militants allegedly involved in the killing of Mian Rashid Hussain, the son of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa information minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain.

DPO Mohammad Hussain told Dawn on Wednesday that the arrested militants included Qari Abdul Qayyum and Usman, both members of the suicide bombing squad of Taliban. They were captured by the police in Karachi in a kidnapping case.

Meanwhile, an alleged robber was killed and two others arrested by police during a robbery attempt here on Wednesday.

The police said that four robbers were looting bus passengers near Trakha village when police and villagers reached the spot. An exchange of fire took place and as a result a robber was killed while two others were arrested. —Correspondent

Nursing hostel gutted

CHITRAL, Jan 11: The nursing hostel situated inside the children and gynae portion of DHQ Hospital was reduced to ashes here on Wednesday morning when all of sudden a fire broke out.

The medical superintendent of DHQ hospital, Dr. Nazir Ahmed, told Dawn that a room of the hostel caught fire which engulfed the entire building. However, the jawans of district border police struggled hard to contain the fire from proliferating to other parts of the hospital.

He said that the reason of fire is yet to be ascertained for which an inquiry was in progress.Chitral DCO Rahmatullah Wazir also rushed to the spot along with his border force and supervised the fire fighting operation. —Correspondent

Child protection policy

PESHAWAR, Jan 11: Speakers at a meeting here on Wednesday demanded of the government to formulate child protection policy at provincial level to control incidents of violence against children.

According to a press release, the demand was made at a meeting arranged by Child Protection and Welfare Commission (CPWC).

Speaking at the meeting, MPA Shazia Tehmas said that provincial government has scheduled different training programmes to sensitise police to avoid treating the children like other criminals. She said that under Child Protection and Welfare Act 2010, it was the prime responsibility of police to protect children from violence.

Deputy chief protection officer Ijaz Khan said that different departments working for the welfare of children should develop their contacts and strengthen their relationship. —Bureau Report

Fata reforms termed insufficient

KHAR, Jan 11: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Bajaur Agency general secretary Senator Maulana Abdur Rashid has said that Fata reforms are insufficient to meet the basic needs of the tribesmen.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, he said that the JUI would continue its struggle for the implementation of Islamic laws and positive reforms in Fata.

Senator Abdur Rashid said: “We want implementation of Shariat in the country only through ballot not through bullet.” He said that the party would pursue the objective through peaceful means.

Replying to a question, he said that peace talks between Taliban and the government were in the best interest of tribal people and their areas. —Correspondent

Complaints against police

PESHAWAR, Jan 11: Home and tribal affairs department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has taken strong notice of the complaints against police for harassing the Afghan refugees at different checkpoints.

The home department in a letter directed the provincial police chief to take notice of the complaints against the police raised by officials of UNHCR Peshawar, Afghan Consul General at Peshawar, ministry of foreign affairs and Safron.

It was stated that such acts on part of the police were bringing a bad name to Pakistan at national and international levels. Referring to the complaints, it was stated that the police in Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Hangu and Kohat were forcing the refugees to pay money while crossing Kotal Tunnel on their way to Afghanistan. —Bureau Report

Lawyers join PTI

PESHAWAR, Jan 11: A group of 26 lawyers belonging to Swabi district on Wednesday joined Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf and vowed to strengthen the party for uprooting corruption from the society.

The lawyers belonging to different political parties, led by Advocate Mian Faheem, member of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council, joined PTI during a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Wednesday

Prominent among the lawyers include, Advocate Ahmad Ali Khan, president District Bar Association, district Swabi, Mustafa Kamal, Azizur Rehman, Humayun Khan, Aqeel Khan, Naeem Khan, Sareer Khan, Sahibzada Arshad Ali Khan, Syed Waqar Ali Shah, Kamran Khan and others.

On the occasion, Mian Fahim said that the corrupt rulers were responsible for the growing messy situation in the province. —Bureau Report

Malakand University results

TIMERGARA, Jan, 11: The University of Malakand (UoM) on Wednesday announced results of B.A./B.Sc. supplementary examination, said a press release issued here.

A total of 10,632 candidates appeared in the B.A. exams out of which only 2,375 were declared successful and the result remained 22.34 per cent. Similarly 795 candidates appeared in the B.Sc. examination and 436 were declared pass with 54.84 per cent result.

Another press release said that 60 candidates appearing for admission to M.Phil and 22 for Ph.D in the department of physics, said.

Meanwhile, traffic police in Khall registered cases against 350 vehicles during the last 10 days on violation of traffic rules. —Correspondent

Local leaders quit PML-Q

ABBOTTABAD Jan 11: Pakistan Muslim League-Q suffered a major setback in Hazara after key leaders resigned from the party on the issue of separate Hazara province.

Those who resigned from the party are former federal minister Amanulllah Khan Jadoon, former NA deputy speaker Sardar Mohammad Yaqoob, former MPA Nisar Safdar, Sahibzada Mir Mohammad Azhar Bakoti, Jan Mohammad Qureshi, Ali Khan Jadoon, Sardar Sharafat, Ayaz Khan Jadoon and Mohammad Akhter Qureshi.

The announcement came at a hurriedly called press conference at the residence of Amanulllah Khan Jadoon here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Amanullah Jadoon and Sardar Yaqoob lashed out at the PML-Q central leadership, which, they alleged, had failed to support the Hazara movement in the National Assembly. —Correspondent
