KARACHI, Jan 2: A worker of the Awami National Party was gunned down in the SITE area on Monday, police said.

They said that the killing of 32-year-old Furqan Shah caused tension in the SITE and adjoining localities, which reverberated with heavy gunfire that left at least four people wounded.

The police said that two unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle targeted Mr Shah, who was the vice president of the union council 1, SITE, close to his home within the remit of the SITE-A police station. He sustained bullet wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival, the police said.

As the news of his death reached the area, unidentified persons fired into the air and forced shopkeepers to pull down their shutters.

The police said that stray bullets hit at least four persons — Muhammad Ishaq, Hasnain, Akhtar Husain and Zulfiqar — within the remit of the Pak Colony police station. All the wounded were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment, they added.

The firing stopped only after the arrival of a heavy contingent of the police and Rangers in the troubled areas. However, businesses and commercial activities remained suspended in the area.

SSP West Asif Ajaz said that though the victim also had some personal enmities, the actual situation with regard to the motive of the incident would be cleared after the lodging of an FIR by his family.
