Walk against corruption

TIMERGARA, Dec 27: The University of Malakand on Tuesday arranged a walk against corruption.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Rasul Jan, faculty members, students and employees of the university participated in the walk, according to a press release.

Addressing the participants, the vice-chancellor said education in all its manifestations was the key to future prosperity. “We can progress only if accurate and timely steps are taken to educate our young generation. The importance of education becomes more evident in the face of challenges faced by our nation,” he said.

Dr Rasool Jan said education was the only way to get rid of corruption in society. “Advanced nations have overcome corrupt practices to a great extent mainly through education, and I am optimistic that we too can overcome it through education,” he said. —Correspondent

Student commits suicide

KARAK, Dec 27: A student committed suicide over a domestic issue in the Marwatan Banda area of Karak on Tuesday.

Police quoted the relatives as saying that Museebur Rehman, a student of ninth class, shot himself dead inside his house. The Takht Nusrati police are investigating the incident.

In another incident, an elderly man was killed by his rivals over dispute on grazing cattle in their fields in Latamber area. The victim, Mohammad Hayat, died instantly.

The Latamber police registered case against three accused, Qaiser Iqbal, Akhtar Iqbal and Fida Mohammad, on the report of Ismael, son of the victim.

The police arrested an accused, Akhtar Iqbal, during a raid, while the other accused were still at large. —Correspondent

No polio case in Shangla

ALPURI, Dec 27: Not a single case of polio was reported in Shangla district since 2008 due to the efforts made by ulema, district administration, health department and National Institute for Research and Development.

This was stated by acting executive district officer health Shafiul Mulk while addressing a function at Shangla Press Club. He said there had been few refusal cases in some localities of the district because of Taliban militants, but the situation changed after the local ulema, health authorities and district administration played due role in this respect.

The EDO said only three children of a local educated man of Wandi UC had yet to be administered polio vaccines. —Correspondent

Power outages in GB

GILGIT, Dec 27: Long hours of loadshedding in Gilgit and other parts have paralysed life with the water and power department seemingly helpless to cope with the situation.

Prolong power outages also sparked protest demonstrations in Skardu, Gilgit and Chilas. In some parts police also clashed with the protesters.

The long duration of outages badly affected functioning of hospitals, schools, markets, and government and private offices.

The Water and Power Minister Wazir Shakil told reporters in Gilgit that efforts were afoot to overcome the power shortage and soon the diesel generators would be run to ensure supply of electricity. —Correspondent

Woman killed on road

NOWSHERA, Dec 27: A woman was killed and two others sustained serious injuries in two different incidents here on Tuesday.

Police said a speeding truck (DIK-2843) struck a woman, Shamspari of Zara Mena, who was waiting at a bus stop at Risalpur, killing her on the spot. The truck driver, Lajbar, was arrested. In another incident, two persons sustained severe injuries when their car collided with a dumper truck at Akora Khattak.

Akora Khattak police said the injured were identified as Siyar Mohammad and Jamil, residents of Gulbahar, Peshawar, who were going to Islamabad in the car. They were taken to Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar in critical condition. —Correspondent

Varsity announces results

TIMERGARA, Dec 27: Madeeha Ahad topped the department of chemistry, University of Malakand, by obtaining 915 marks out of 1,100 in the annual examination 2011.

The university on Tuesday announced results of the MSc Chemistry and International Relations (IR), said a press release issued by the controller of examination.

Qaisar Ali stood second with 882 marks while Bahramand got third position with 820 marks.

Similarly, Irfanul Haq of the IR department got first position by obtaining 737 marks. Attaur Rahman stood second with 688 marks while Amjad Ali got 3rd position obtaining 660 marks. A total of 511 candidates appeared in the IR annual examination. The result remained 27.40 per cent. —Correspondent
