LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has done gross injustice to a number of former cricketers such as Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad, Intikhab Alam, Moin Khan, Imtiaz Ahmad, Sarfraz Nawaz, Moin Khan by merely assigning them a recommendatory role in a seven-member ‘Task Team’ for domestic cricket.

Former captain and all-rounder Wasim Akram’s name was also among the task team members but he refused to accept the role citing pressing engagements, a PCB press release said on Wednesday. However, the other members have agreed to accept the recommendatory role.

When contacted, one of the members said on condition of anonymity that he was unhappy over the recommendatory role in the committee and the PCB should not have mentioned this in its official press release which sort of belittled the former greats.

“We accepted the assignment as a good gesture and with a spirit to contribute something towards improvement of domestic structure. However, mentioning our role in the PCB press release has served nothing, but has rather embarrassed us,” he said.

“The body will have a recommendatory role and the recommendations will not be binding on PCB. They will assist the PCB in evaluating the domestic cricket and its problems,” the official PCB press release states.

The member did not negate the impression that big names had been included in the Task Team simply to minimise any criticism from them in future, a traditional style of the PCB to counter criticism.

“Chairman PCB, Zaka Ashraf, has approved to constitute a Task Team to give suggestions to PCB for the improvement of Domestic Cricket in Pakistan. The Task Team will study and review the existing structure of domestic cricket considering its weaknesses and strengths and will propose any changes if they feel that is required. The body will meet and deliberate at times and places of their convenience. They will meet as many times as they consider appropriate to undertake the study and review,” the press release further added.

“The task team will submit its recommendations to the PCB within two months of its formulation. The Task Team comprises Intikhab Alam (chairman), Javed Miandad, Zaheer Abbas, Sarfraz Nawaz, Imtiaz Ahmed, Moin Khan, Iqbal Qasim. Zakir Khan, Director Domestic Cricket, is the secretary of the committee.
