RAWALPINDI, Dec 2: Five policemen of Sadar Barooni police station were booked for allegedly shooting down a suspected drug dealer during a raid on a house in Chak Jilal Din on Friday, the sources said.

Police claimed that suspected drug peddler Haq Nawaz was wanted by the police in narcotics-related case as his two sons had already been serving jail term in similar cases.

Acting on a tip-off, the police party raided the house. Inspector Malik Sohail Zafar revealed as the police party led by ASI Shahzad Ahmed comprising four constables Mansoor Akhtar, Tahir Mehmood, Mehran Ali and Mohammad Farhat reached Haq Nawaz's house, the inmates started pelting bricks and stones at the raiding party.

He said ASI Shahzad Ahmed fired shots in the air to stop the inmates from pelting stones but one of the bullets pierced into the head of Haq Nawaz injuring him critically.

At this, the police party slipped away leaving the injured behind. Later, Haq Nawaz was removed to the DHQ hospital where he died in the evening. His body was handed over to family after postmortem.

A police official claimed that one of the policemen was also injured during the stone pelting though he was not brought to the hospital.

Inspector Sohail Zafar confirmed that a murder case was registered against the police party but he said he could not confirm whether a policeman was hurt or not because all of them had disappeared after the incident.

Malik Amjad, nephew of Haq Nawaz told Dawn that the police targeted his uncle after entering the house.

He said that the policemen killed his uncle in revenge as his son Gulzar had a brawl with ASI Shahzad a couple of days ago over some issue. But the issue was settled at that time.
