Security for Muharram

ATTOCK, Nov18: The district police officer Dr Akhtar Abbass on Friday said a foolproof security plan had been chalked out for Muharram processions and Majalis.

Speaking at the District Peace Committee (DPC) meeting, attended by of Ulema of all schools of thought, traders and police officials, he said all Imambargahs, Majalis would have one entry and exit points where walkthrough gates would be installed.

Besides law enforcers, the organisers of Majalis in Imambargahs would also detail volunteers there to avoid entry of any unauthorised person, he said.

Parking of vehicles near the Imambargahs would not be allowed, he said adding the organizers had been asked to adhere to the procession’s routes and timings. There will be complete ban on display of arms, walk chalking and publication of any hate material. — Correspondent

Awareness drive

TAXILA, Nov 18: National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) on Friday launched a campaign to make the people aware of the safety measures while driving in foggy and semi-foggy conditions.

Sector Commander M-1 SSP Abbass Ahsan along with his team and mobile education unit kicked off the campaign at Burhan toll plaza to educate the people about the safety measures they must adopt while driving in the fog.

Briefing the officials, he said that no vehicle should be intercepted on a highway on foggy days unless absolute necessity. He said that NHMP officials should request the commuters to drive at a moderate speed keeping a safe distance and abstain from smoking or listening music while driving. He said that the officials should place six cones at a safe distance instead of three at the site of a breakdown.  — Correspondent

House looted

RAWALPINDI, Nov 18: A house located at Range Road was looted by four gunmen who made off with jewellery valuing Rs2 million, cash Rs250,000 and six cell phones, police said on Friday.

Mohammad Nasim lodged a complaint with R A Bazaar police that his son in response to ring of the bell opened the door while he was not at home. He said four armed men forced their way into the house and held his family hostage at gunpoint. He said the robbers also roughed up his mother and father. Later, they searched the cupboards and fetched 40-tola gold ornaments, Rs250,000 in cash and six cell phones and later escaped after locking the inmates in a room.— Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Nov 18: Mother of former member of the National Assembly and principal secretary to PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, Safia Khanum, died on Friday.

Her Namaz-i-Janaza will be held on Saturday at 2pm near her residence at 22 Park Road Banigala.
