KARACHI, Nov 16: The wife of a prominent businessman was killed during an armed hold-up in Bahadurabad late on Tuesday night.

Police said the incident took place close to a superstore, where Saeeda Naseem, 49, was present in her car when two suspects riding a motorcycle stopped by, held the woman at gunpoint and snatched a cellphone and jewellery from her.

Not content with the booty, the suspects tried to force their way into the car apparently to look for more valuables. The woman resisted it, said a senior police officer, and the suspects shot her and fled with all valuables. They fired three shots at point-blank range before escaping, the officer added.

The wounded woman was rushed to a nearby private hospital by her driver, but she could not be revived.

Police said the victim woman was the wife of S.M. Naseem, chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association.

At the time of the incident, the woman’s driver was buying flour from a ‘chakki’.

Police said the dead woman was a resident of Gizri, where the family had moved about a year ago from Alhamra Society.

The victim used to do her shopping for groceries at a particular shop in Bahadurabad, police added.

No FIR about the murder was registered at the Bahadurabad police station. A duty officer said the family had not yet come there to lodge an FIR.

Shopkeeper killed

A shopkeeper was killed by gunmen in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Wednesday.

Police said the incident occurred inside a shopping centre, where Jameel, 50, son of Sawan Masih, had a small cosmetic shop.

The victim was going to open his shop (No 79) in the Own Shopping Centre, where two suspects following him fired at him. The suspects who were on foot walked away after the shooting.

The victim was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the victim lived in Essa Nagri and was the father of five.

An FIR in connection with the killing was not registered at the Aziz Bhatti police station till late in the evening.

Suicide

A young man committed suicide reportedly due to poverty in Martin Quarters on Wednesday.

Police said Mohammad Shoaib, 30, son of Wali Mohammad, was the father of two and washed cars for a living.

Police said that on Wednesday morning the young man hanged himself from the ceiling.

Police shifted the body to the Civil Hospital Karachi for legal formalities.

Wounded

A man who had become a complainant in the latest FIR against Afaq Ahmed, chairman of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi), was wounded in a firing incident in Landhi on Wednesday.

Police said Khalid Husain, son of Ghulam Husain, was shot at in Landhi’s C-1 Area by assailants.

The wounded man was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

Hospital sources said the victim had suffered a bullet wound in the leg and was said to be in a stable condition.

The fresh FIR (244/2011) against Afaq Ahmed and his aides was registered by the Landhi police on a complaint of Khalid Hussain, a resident of the town’s C-1 Area, on Oct 10.
