Suspected terrorist arrested

RAWALPINDI, Nov 10: A wanted terror suspect allegedly involved in the terrorist attack on Shah-i-Najaf Imambargah in Khyaban-e-Sir Syed in 2002 was arrested as claimed by the police on Thursday.

The government had announced Rs200,000 head money for the arrest of Qari Gul Mohammad who was desperately wanted by the law enforcement agencies for his involvement in the terrorist attack.

Besides Qari Gul Mohammad, four other terror suspects have been on the government’s wanted list in the same case as 14 suspects had already been captured and they are being tried.

At least 11 worshippers were killed and 14 were injured when a group of heavily armed gunmen wearing masks attacked Shah-i-Najaf Imambargah, Khayaban-e-Sir Syed, Rawalpindi on Feb 26, 2002.

The accused having links with banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi had been declared as proclaimed offender.

According to the police, the terror suspect was arrested from Pirwadhai area and he would be produced before the anti-terrorist court for remand.— Staff Reporter

27 illegal immigrants arrive

RAWALPINDI, Nov 10: A special flight with 27 illegal Pakistani immigrants on board deported by the Greek authorities arrived at Benazir Bhutto International Airport on Thursday night, official sources said.

According to Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) immigration authorities, some of the deportees were caught by the Greek authorities for entering the country illegally while a few were involved in illegal activities.

The Pakistani deportees were accompanied by Greek ambassador who handed them over to Pakistani authorities on arrival at the airport.

Of the 27 deportees, 22 were from Gujranwala division, one from Peshawar while four were from Islamabad. — Staff Reporter

Girl torches herself

ISLAMABAD, Nov 10: A young girl tried to commit suicide after she was admonished by her mother over negligence on Thursday, police said.

The victim was identified as Sayeda Bibi 22, a resident of Shaikhpur located in rural area of Tarnol. The police said that her mother asked her to hang out the sacrificial meat in the sun to dry it. She brought the meat out of the room and put it on earth where a cat ate up the most of it.

On this, her mother admonished her. Dejected and insulted, she walked towards the kitchen and sprinkled kerosene oil all over her body and showed a burning matchstick to it. Hearing her screams, her family rushed towards her and found her engulfed by flames.

The family extinguished the fire and later shifted her to hospital where she was given medical assistance and was still under the observation of doctors.

The police said that she was badly burnt and was in critical condition.— Staff Reporter

Cash, valuables returned

ATTOCK, Nov 10: The cash and valuables taken into custody by Rescue-1122 officials after a road accident were returned on Thursday to the relatives of the deceased and the injured.

In-charge Rescue-1122 Dr Mohammad Ashfaq said in a press release that officials of the emergency service during a rescue operation had taken into custody cash, prize bonds worth Rs212,135, 600 Saudi riyal, jewellery,  mobile phones and other valuables of three deceased and six injured persons who fell victims to a road accident near Teenmeala Chowk at Attock-Kamra road on November 4.

He said that the cash of Rs152,000, prize bonds of Rs40,000, 600 Saudi riyal and gold ornaments were returned to an injured woman Nargis Shaheen whose husband  Sheikh Iftikhar was killed in the mishap. Similarly, the amounts of Rs17,000 and Rs1,380 were returned to the relatives of two other deceased persons, Mohammad Mustafa and Mohammad Arsalan respectively.

Similarly, an amount of Rs1,000 was returned to an injured person Abdul Waheed, Rs645 to Mohammad Naeem and Rs110 along with computer and mobile phone’s SIMs  to Arsalan Ahmed, he said. While mobile phones were also handed over to two other injured persons, Haroon Raza and Mohammad Tanveer, he said.

“It is our duty to rescue people by delivering timely emergency service with devotion and dedication and also ensure the safety of their assets in case of any mishap,” he said. — Correspondent
