LAHORE, Oct 28: The Muslim Town police on Friday registered a murder case against three senior doctors of the Shaikh Zayed Hospital after lawyers blocked the New Campus Road for traffic to protest the death of their young colleague on Friday.

The case was registered under section 302 of Pakistan Penal Code against Associate Professor Dr Haroon Majeed, Assistant Professor Dr Haroon Dar and Senior Registrar Dr Zulfiqar.

Complainant Shabir Hussain of Ferozewala alleged that his son, Rafique Ijaz, died owing to negligence on part of the Shaikh Zayed Hospital doctors.

A source said the police registered the murder case under section 302 of PPC without asking for autopsy report of the deceased lawyer.

The patient was taken to the hospital three weeks ago. He was later operated upon and shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he died on Friday, a source said.

The protesting lawyers claimed Rafique was suffering from appendicitis which was a minor issue for a teaching institution like Shaikh Zayed Hospital where a number of consultants were available with highly sophisticated infrastructure and other state- of-the-art facilities.

The lawyers alleged that the doctors showed negligence during operation which ultimately led to the death of their young colleague.

Earlier, they had exchanged hot words with the senior admin officials of the hospital for not taking action against the responsible doctors.

Shaikh Zayed Hospital ICU in-charge Prof Dr Nauman told Dawn that the patient was suffering from Ulcerative Colitis and had been operated twice at the hospital owing to serious condition. He was brought by his family in critical condition, Dr Nauman claimed.

He denied allegations of the agitating lawyers, saying senior doctors had provided best available treatment to the patient.

Muslim Town SHO Imran Mahboob confirmed that the case had been registered under section 302 of PPC against three senior doctors of the Shaikh Zayed Hospital.
