THIS is apropos of I.S. Mirza’s letter ‘Pakistan Railways: save it from dying’ (Oct 16). So, another important infrastructure of the country has collapsed due to corruption and mismanagement.

Due to the Pakistan Railways’ collapse, nobody will be affected other than the lower middle class, as the affluent can easily avail themselves of PIA flights and Daewoo buses as their normal means of transportation.

It seems nobody’s bothered even to find out what went wrong with this important, money-generating state institution. In the entire world, railways are used to make profits, whereas in our country they go in perpetual losses. Everywhere else, goods trains are a prime means of earning revenue whereas in our country these trains also go in losses. But, come what may, one thing is for sure: nobody has been asked regarding corruption and no heads have rolled!

In other countries, efforts are made to lay additional railway tracks, whereas in our country railway tracks laid by the British have been uprooted by one of the previous governments. One can only lament the vision and foresight of such a government taking such an incomprehensible decision.

One shudders to think that not one but more than a 100 trains have been shut down.

I think we need not one but many people like Anna Hazare of India to emerge and clean the rot.

Keeping the existing hopeless state of the railways in view, it is hoped the government would pay full attention to speed up its revival for its proper functioning.
