Girl shot dead by fiancé

PESHAWAR, Oct 21: A teenaged girl was allegedly killed by her fiancé as he was opposed to her getting education here at Pishtakhara area on Friday.

The suspect, Kamal Khan, a resident of Achini area, allegedly fired at the girl, when she was going to school in the morning. Complainant in the case is father of the deceased girl, who told the police that his daughter was a 10th grade student at a local school in Sufaid Dehri situated in the jurisdiction of Pishtakhara police station.

The complainant stated his daughter was engaged to Kamal Khan, who was against her getting education.

The complainant alleged her daughter was shot dead while on way to school. An official at the concerned police station told Dawn they had registered FIR under section 302 of Pakistan Penal Code and were searching for the accused who had escaped after the occurrence. —Bureau Report

Kohistan by-election

MANSEHRA, Oct 21: Ten candidates are in the run for by-election in KP-61 (Kohistan-I) constituency, officials said on Friday.

The seat had fallen vacant after the demise of Awami National Party MPA Maulana Abadullah earlier this month.

Ten candidates, three of them independents, had submitted their nomination papers on October 20, the last day of submission of the nomination papers.

Those who submitted the nomination papers included the nephew of late Maulana Abadullah, Sajjdullh of ANP, Mian Noor of PPP-S, Malik Aurangzab PML-Q, Misar Khan PPP, Maulana Dildar and  Maulana Kareem JUI-F, Mashooqur Rehman MQM, and independent candidates Mohammad Tahir, Kafayatullah and Mohammad Shazad.

The candidates can withdraw their nomination papers up to October 27, and final list would be displayed on October 28 and polling would be held on November 24. —Correspondent

Polio vaccination

TIMERGARA, Oct 21: The National Research and Development Foundation (NRDF) core group member Qari Nasirul Haq has urged the people to vaccinate their children to save them from fatal diseases like polio.

Mr Haq, who is also general secretary of JUI-F Samar Bagh, told a meeting of community members at Kotkay Jandol on Friday medical research proved that there were no harmful, illegal and immoral substances in polio drops.

He appealed to teachers, students and clerics to play their active role in convincing people to give anti-polio drops to their children.

Meanwhile, Dr Mujeebur Rahman, general secretary JUI-F Lower Dir, told media men on Friday that thousands of party workers would participate in the Mufti Mahmood Conference to be held in Peshawar on Oct 23. —Correspondent

Mobilising community

LAKKI MARWAT, Oct 21: The National Research and Development Foundation (NRDF) held a community group meeting in a remote Mir Azam Michenkhel village on Friday as part of efforts to mobilise community against the deadly polio disease and persuade parents on immunisation of their children.

Among others, EDO health Dr Falak Naz, NRDF coordinator Shahid Anwar, core group member Mufti Ihsanullah, schoolteachers, elders and clerics attended the meeting.

Health experts and religious scholars said Islam had emphasised upon the followers to adopt preventive measures to save themselves from diseases. “If we want to keep ourselves safe from diseases and our children from polio we must follow and act on the advices of health physicians and experts,” they maintained. —Correspondent

Wazir tribe warned

KARAK, Oct 21: A jirga of the elders of seven clans of Khattak tribe on Friday asked the Wazir tribe to ensure that its members didn’t seize and took away cattle of Khattaks in future and to return the cattle already held by them.

The jirga was attended by elders from Bahaderkhel, Charpara, Jala Banda, Noshpa, Khizar Banda, Darishkhel and Anar Banda areas of Banda Daud Shah tehsil. The Khattak elders showed resentment over the unlawful actions of people of Wazir tribe living on the border with the Karak district, and said the ‘atrocities’ of the Wazir tribe had become intolerable.

They said the professional criminals of Wazir tribe were involved in seizing and taking away the cattle owned by the people of Khattak tribe. —Correspondent

Importance of cleanliness

TIMERGARA, Oct 21: Speakers at an awareness session on hand washing at a school in Saddo on Friday stressed upon citizens to observe cleanliness in their homes and streets and maintain personal hygiene according to the teachings of Islam.

They said by observing cleanliness they could save a lot of money spent on medical treatment.

The session organised by the United Nations Habitat Programme was addressed by its infrastructure manager Hamid Mumtaz, field coordinator Arshad Khan, district disaster management officer Hikmatullah Wazir and others.

Students and teachers of different schools attended the session while some of the students also presented speeches on the importance of cleanliness in Urdu, English and Pashto. The project officials said 80 per cent of normal deaths were caused due to sue of contaminated food and water in rural areas. —Correspondent
