KABUL, Afghanistan: Nato says at least 115 insurgents have been killed in ongoing operations in a northeastern Afghan province known for being a hotbed of foreign militant fighters.

The US-led alliance said on Thursday the fighting in rugged Kunar province near the Afghan-Pakistani border has been going on since around October, 15.

Nato says the coalition and its Afghan partners have killed at least 115 insurgents over the past week to 10 days.

It says Nato and Afghan forces have been involved in a ''series of multiple, smaller operations that have a combined, larger impact.''

The operations come as the alliance has stepped up its efforts elsewhere in eastern Afghanistan with sights set on the feared Haqqani network, an al Qaeda linked group that operates out of Pakistan.
