ISLAMABAD, Oct 14: A sub-inspector of capital police laid down his life on Friday in line of duty while protecting a woman threatened by her former husband, police said.

Sub Inspector Riaz Nadeem received two bullets in his chest and died on the spot while the woman and a police constable were also injured when Masood Elahi, opened indiscriminate fire at them in Sector I-10/2. Both the injured were rushed to the hospital where they were stated to be critical.

The killer – Masood Elahi – was arrested from Charsadah in the late evening.

According to details, Gulshan Bibi divorced by her husband Masood Elahi a decade ago, approached the Sabzi Mandi police to seek protection from her former spouse who, as she alleged, was threatening her of dire consequences if she did not marry him again.

Gulshan Bibi sought police escort to her son, Hamza Masood’s school in Sector I-10/2 as she wanted to get her son’s school leaving certificate.

Sub-Inspector Riaz Nadeem and a constable escorted Gulshan Bibi to school where Masood Elahi, was waiting for his ex-wife.

Seeing the police team, Elahi stared indiscriminate firing at them killing SI Riaz Nadeem and injuring Gulshan Bibi and Constable Mohammad Ashraf.

The attacker managed to escape from the scene after the shootout.  After the autopsy, the SI’s body shifted to Police Line Headquarters where his funeral prayer was offered and he was given guard of honour.

Later the body was handed over to the family. SI Riaz Nadeem, 45, a native of Sargodha joined the police force 25 years ago.

He left behind a widow and four children – two sons and two daughters.
