Policeman kills brother

TANK, Oct 6: A police constable killed his brother over a money dispute here on Thursday.

Police said constable Kaleemullah, along with his neighbour, Saifullah, ambushed his brothers Khalilullah and Rehmatullah, and his nephew and Khalilullah’s son, Jawad on railway station road, critically injuring them.

The injured were taken to Tank tehsil hospital where Rehamutllah succumbed to his wounds, while Khalilullah and his son Jawad were referred to the Dera Ismail Khan in precarious condition. —Correspondent

Hashish, opium seized

ISLAMABAD, Oct 6: The directorate-general customs intelligence and investigations of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has foiled two attempts to smuggle opium and hashish valued at Rs16.74 million and arrested two persons.

FBR said on Thursday staff of the directorate-general intelligence stopped a suspected vehicle (MNV-3857) near Rashakai interchange of motorway. Search of the vehicle led to recovery of 35kgs of hashish concealed in a secret cavity in the rear of the vehicle.

Driver of the vehicle Mohammad Saeed was taken into custody along with hashish and the vehicle.

In another raid, a suspected pick-up (KM-3461) was stopped and on search 35kgs of opium and 204kgs of hashish were recovered concealed in the floor of the vehicle. Driver Mohammad Sarfraz was arrested. —Our Reporter

Complaint against Nadra

PESHAWAR, Oct 6: A complainant Shahbaz Butt has criticised officials of National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) for their failure to issue him computerised national identity card despite lapse of about one year.

In a letter to Justice (retd) Shehzad Akbar Khan, member, Election Commission, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Thursday, the complainant said for a duplicate card clearance he had paid Rs10,000 on October 20 last year but the card could not be issued till date.

“The officials concerned had issued me a token No 56 (form PB00239414) and assured me about issuance of the CNIC within a month but failed to do so,” he complained. Mr Butt said he had many times visited offices of Nadra but none of the officials paid heed towards his problem. He said in case the card was not issued to him he would be unable to cast his vote in the next elections. —Bureau Report

Awareness about Congo fever

PESHAWAR, Oct 6: The health department has stressed the need for creating awareness among the public regarding Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF).

A spokesman of the department said on Thursday that the CCHF was a hemorrhagic fever caused by a virus (Nairovirus). It is transmitted to human by bite of an infected tick or direct contact with blood and secretions of an infected animal or human.

Seasonal occurrence of CCHF takes place in Pakistan from spring to fall with peak in June and October.

The spokesman said the chief secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at a meeting ordered the health department to direct all EDOs (health) in the province to coordinate with DCOs and TMAs in sensitising the butchers and other animal handlers on prevention of CCHF and to take precautionary measures.—APP

Pesco workers’ strike

PESHAWAR, Oct 6: Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union has expressed concern over the delay in appointment of relatives of the deceased workers and announced a province-wide strike and sit-ins against the government.

The decision was taken in the union’s executive body meeting held with its provincial chairman Haji Mohammad Iqbal in the chair here on Thursday.

The participants said the families of the deceased workers were facing financial problems but the concerned officials were least bothered about the grave situation. They said the employees in all the districts would hold protest demonstrations to press for their demands. —Bureau Report

Electoral rolls review

PESHAWAR, Oct 6: The Election Commission will review the progress of the ongoing process of revision of the electoral rolls 2011 pertaining to Peshawar distinct today (Friday).

The high level review meeting will be chaired by Justice (retd) Shahzad Akbar Khan, member of the Election Commission of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The meeting will be attended by the public representatives from Peshawar, including representatives of political parties, Nadra and census department. —Bureau Report

CHITRAL, Oct 6:  Former district nazim Chitral Maghfirat Shah has said no progress is possible without collective efforts by the community members.

Addressing a prize distribution ceremony at the end of football tournament in Shongosh Oveer village of upper Chitral, he said the backward areas of the district like Oveer were still without basic amenities of life. He said it was heartening to note that the people of these areas had developed a sense of inspiration.

He admired the people of Oveer union council for their struggle against poverty and despondency.

Mr Shah expressed his dismay over the working procedure of some NGOs whose hard and tough conditions were not acceptable to the people of many areas like Oveer. —Correspondent

Public friendly police

PESHAWAR, Oct 6: Provincial Police Officer Fiaz Ahmad Khan Toru has directed police high ups to keep hand on the pulse of the general public while performing duty and adopt measures for eradication of crime with their suggestions.

“You must be accessible to the general public, must adopt positive approach for redressing public complaints and give weight to stakeholders’ consultations,” remarked the police chief while presiding over a high-level meeting of law and order at Central Police Office on Thursday.

The meeting was convened to review the crime situation of the last nine months of the current year. Additional IGP Operations Abdul Latif Khan Gandapur, Additional IGP Investigation Mohammad Tanvir-ul-Haq Sipra, Additional IGP Special Branch Rehmat Khan Mehsud and others attended the meeting. —Bureau Report

Uplift schemes

PESHAWAR, Oct 6: Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti has said that the government has sufficient funds for development schemes and asked the MPAs to play their role in swift implementation of the projects.

He said that the government would complete reconstruction work in terrorism- and flood-affected areas and there was no plan to close down any such project. The chief minister was talking to provincial ministers and MPAs hailing from different political parties, including the ANP and PPP, during his weekly meetings at his office on Thursday. ——Bureau Report
