KARACHI, Sept 30: A man was killed and four others were wounded in a clash between two groups of bike-rickshaw drivers in New Muzaffarabad Colony near Rehri Goth within the remit of the Quaidabad police station on Friday.

The police said that the two groups had been at odds for the past few months over the control of the area’s bike-rickshaw terminal, which was being used by one group and the other group wanted to take it over.

The bike-rickshaw (known as Qingqi) service has become a popular mode of public transport in the area for a short-distance journey, said a duty officer at the Quaidabad police station. He said that the two groups had a heated argument after which one group attacked the other with firearms. As result, he added, Nazarur Rehman alias Lal, 25, sustained a fatal bullet wound in the chest.

Four other drivers, Wilayat Khan, Sher Nawab, Mohammad and Fazlur Rehman, were also wounded in the firing.

The police said that the deceased succumbed to his wound before he could be taken to hospital. Three other victims were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment.

Police said that the attackers managed to flee the scene after the incident.

The deceased was a resident of New Muzaffarabad Colony, the duty officer said. An FIR could not be registered as the bereaved family was busy with his funeral, he added.

Body found

The trussed-up body of a young man was found dumped in the Lyari river on Friday.

A duty officer at the Pak Colony police station said that body was spotted in the Miran Naka-Old Mauripur section of the river and bore torture marks.

It was shifted to the Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination.

However, a dispute between the Pak Colony and Shershah police stations over the jurisdiction of the crime scene considerably delayed legal formalities and none of them appeared ready to register an FIR.

Crushed under vehicle

A labourer died and another two were injured when a long vehicle broke the jack it was resting on.

An official at the Clifton police station said that trailer was resting on the jack for some welding work while one of its tyres was also being changed on the main Gizri Road.

They said that Noor Mohammad, who was doing the welding work under the vehicle, was crushed to death when the jack broke and the vehicle collapsed.

Dildar Husain and Mohammad Waheed, who were changing the tyre, were injured in the incident and taken to the JPMC for treatment.

Student drowns, three rescued

A student of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology drowned near the Manora beach on Thursday night. His three companions were, however, rescued.

Police said Hasan Kayani, along with three other students of the university’s Abdul Haq Campus, had gone to the Manora beach on Thursday evening. They all were swept away by strong currents but Sher Dil, Mohammad Arif and Ghulam Ali were rescued, they said.

The condition of Sher Dil was stated to be precarious at the ICU of the Civil Hospital.

The victims hailed from Gilgit and lived in a hotel near Nagan Chowrangi, the police said.
