TAXILA, Sept 30: The University of Wah has joined the group of private sector universities which are eligible for public funding.

Addressing a press conference here, Vice Chancellor Dr Maqbool Ahmed said the government funding would cover faculty development, foreign faculty hiring programme and infrastructure development through Higher Education Commission (HEC).—Correspondent

Protest rally

MURREE, Sept 30: Workers and local leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-N, Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI), Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), Jama'at-i-Islami (JI), and others on Friday brought out a protest rally after Jumma prayers on Mall Road against the US and in favour of Pakistan army.

The protesters were carrying banners and placards inscribed with anti-American slogans. Rally was started from GPO chowk and after passing through Chinnar Chowk returned back to the starting point. A large number of people participated in the rally.— Correspondent

Huge rush in banks

RAWALPINDI, Sept 30: A huge rush was seen at banks in the twin cities on Friday as people returned the old notes of Rs500 denomination which State Bank of Pakistan said would cease to be valid from October 1.

The regional offices of National Bank of Pakistan in Rawalpindi and Islamabad remained open till 8pm to facilitate the people in exchanging the big and old notes with the new ones. Bank employees had a hectic day and were seen exchanging harsh words with the noisy customers who had stood in long queues outside. In Rawalpindi, brokers reportedly bought the old notes of Rs500 from shopkeepers and others for Rs490. — Our Reporter

Police nab 72 Afghans

ISLAMABAD, Sept 30: The Bara Kahu police arrested 72 Afghans during a search operation at different localities of the area on Friday, police said.

Heavy contingent of police along with anti-terrorism squad, bomb disposal squad, and sniffer dogs participated in the search operation under the supervision of SP City Capt (retired) Mohammad Ilyas to clean the area from the suspected person.

During the search the police took 40 Afghans in their custody from different localities of Bara Kahu, 20 of them were found staying without any legal documents. The arrestees were shifted to police station for further legal action. —Staff Reporter
