Two shot dead for honour

BATKHELA, Sept 22: A youth shot dead his sister-in-law and her alleged lover in an honour-related incident in jurisdiction of Qalangai Levies post in Malakand protected area on Thursday.

According to a report lodged with the Qalangai police station the woman was aged 20 who was shot dead in the guestroom of her house.

The accused surrendered to Qalangai Levies post after the incident. He told police he took the extreme step after seeing his sister-in-law and the man in objectionable condition. Husband of the deceased woman is a government servant. The Malakand Levies handed over the bodies to the family members after postmortem in the Batkhela hospital. —Correspondent

Old man found murdered

PESHAWAR, Sept 22: Body of an elderly man was found in agriculture fields near Atta Mohammad Garhi along Kohat Road on Thursday, police said.

An official of the Bala Mani said body of a sixty-year-old man had been recovered which had visible signs of bullet injuries on his body. “We have shifted the body to local morgue,” the official said and added he might have been killed somewhere else and dumped near Dir Colony area. —Bureau Report

Scores held in crackdown

NOWSHERA, Sept 22: The police arrested seven proclaimed offenders and 37 other outlaws during a crackdown here on Thursday.

Sources said a crackdown was launched against anti-social elements in the district in which seven proclaimed offenders, who were wanted to police in other districts, while 37 other anti-social elements, were held in different cases. The police also recovered five Kalashnikovs, seven Kalakovs, eight pistols and thousands of live rounds from their possession.

The operation was carried out in Ziarat Kaka Sahib, Nowshera Kalan, Mehrati, Pir Sabaq and Badrashi areas. —Correspondent

Illegal appointments

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Sept 22: Governor Barrister Masood Kausar has taken notice of the misuse of powers and illegal appointments made by the vice-chancellor Gomal University, Dr Mansoor Akbar Kundi.

Sources said the governor’s secretariat had issued a letter dated July 23, 2011 in which the governor had taken a grim view of the appointments made by the university administration. The letter stated Dr Kundi had misused his powers under the university act. The governor had already directed the vice chancellor to terminate services of senior officials, said the letter, a copy of which was made available to this correspondent.

The governor also directed the VC to advertise the posts and make early appointments on permanent basis, but the VC ignored the directives. —Correspondent

Flood-hit stage protest

NOWSHERA, Sept 22: The flood affected people on Thursday took out a procession and threatened to court arrests if their demands were not accepted till Oct 26.

“We cannot wait further and are ready to court arrests collectively if the government did not fulfill our demands before October 26,” said chairman, Tehrik-i-Abadkari Mutassereen-i-Selab, Ikhtiar Wali Khan, while addressing the protesters. The protesters marched from the Nowshera press club to Shobra Chowk. The flood affected people said they were crying for the second installment of the Watan Card. —Correspondent

Redressing grievances

ABBOTTABAD, Sept 22: Chief commissioner, regional tax office (RTO) Abbottabad Asad Ali Jan has ordered for revival of the grievances cell and directed the Hazara tax bar association (HTBA) officials to ensure speedy disposal of complaints.

This he said while addressing as the chief guest at a reception organised by HTBA in his honour for assuming charge of RTO chief commissioner here on Thursday.

Asad Ali asked the tax bar association to help the RTO implement policies of FBR, which he termed business-friendly, and added FBR had planned to widen the tax net.

The chief commissioner remarked that any officials found violating the tax laws would be penalised. —Correspondent

Death toll rises

PESHAWAR, Sept 22: The death toll in the Sept 19 bomb blast at CDs Market at Nashtarabad Peshawar has risen to seven as another badly burnt boy breathed his last at Lady Reading Hospital on Thursday.

The victim was identified as Haseeb of Sikandarpura Peshawar. A hospital source said the victim was a grade-II student at Islamia Public School located in his locality.

He had sustained critical wounds while sitting inside a car while on way to participate in a wedding party at Shahi Bagh the same evening. —Bureau Report
