Young man killed on road

TAXILA, Sept 18: A young man was killed while other received injuries in different road incidents in limits of Hassanabdal police station on Sunday. In first incident, a young man, Jamal Khalid, was crossing the G T Road, when a speedy car knocked him down. Resultantly, he died on the spot.

While in second incident, a motorcyclist was critically injured when a speedy dumper hit him near Burhan. Police sources said that Nadeem Ashraf, an employee of health department, was going on his motorcycle when a he met the accident. Resultantly he received multiple injuries. He was shifted to THQ hospital in critical condition. —Correspondent

Man commits suicide

CHAKWAL, Sept 18: A man committed suicide by setting himself ablaze.

Rahman Ali, a resident of Dhairi Syedaan village in Choa Syedan Shah, was reportedly suffering from depression. He was taken to Combined Military Hospital Kharian where he died.—Correspondent

Khanpur Dam canal

TAXILA, Sept 18: The breach that occurred in the left bank canal of Khanpur Dam a few days ago has been plugged by the Khanpur Dam authorities in collaboration with the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the water supply to the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad has been restored.

While talking to Dawn, Executive Engineer Khanpur Dam on Sunday said as the breach near Mohara Maradu in left bank canal occurred, the water supply to twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad was stopped.

Responding to a question, he said that the spillway of the dam was opened for the second time during the current rainy spell as the water level of the dam reached the maximum conservation level. He said that water was released on Friday in view of rains which might lash the catchment areas of the dam within a few days. He said that the spillway was opened for the second time during this monsoon season while last year, water was released 20 times due to heavy showers. —Correspondent

Seven outlaws nabbed

ISLAMABAD, Sept 18: The capital police on Saturday arrested seven outlaws from different areas of the city for their alleged involvement in robbery and theft incidents and for possessing drugs and illegal weapons, a spokesman for the police said on Saturday.

He said the Golra police, acting on a tip-off, arrested two drug peddlers and recovered 5kg charas and 120gm heroin from their possession.

The Sabzi Mandi police arrested a person as he along with his accomplice had allegedly snatched Rs49, 000 outside a bank from Mohammad Akhtar.

Likewise, the Shahzad Town and Koral police nabbed two persons during routine checking after recovery of 30-bore pistols from them. Similarly, the Tarnol police arrested an outlaw and recovered stolen items worth Rs27, 000 from him. Moreover, the Secretariat police arrested a man after recovery of a 12-bore gun. The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) recovered 30-bore pistol from an alleged robber.— Staff Reporter

Anti-polio drive from today

TAXILA, Sept 18: The five-day anti-polio drive would be launched in Taxila and Wah Cantonment today (Monday, Sept 19) and about 80,000 children of less than five years of age would be administered anti-polio drops.

In this regard, the district health authorities have directed all the concerned health officials to properly manage the immunisation drive following the strategy to meet the set target. In a meeting, Executive District Officer (EDO) Health Dr Zafar Iqbal Gondal said that the district health department had set a target of administering anti-polio drops to every child below five years of age in the district and for the purpose an effective strategy had been devised. —Correspondent

More rain likely

ISLAMABAD, Sept 18: Rain and thundershower are expected at isolated places of upper Punjab, Hazara, Malakand division and Kashmir in next 24 hours.

However, weather will remain dry elsewhere in the country. According to the report of Pakistan Meteorological Department, the westerly wave and weak monsoon currents are affecting upper parts of the country.

During last 24 hours, isolated rain and thunderstorm occurred in Eastern Sindh, Faisalabad & Malakand divisions, Kashmir and adjoining hilly areas.—APP

Seminar, walk on dengue

Fateh Jang 18 Sept: A seminar on dengue virus is scheduled on Monday in Town Hall here, Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Taufique told Dawn.

The drive against dengue virus has been started in all union councils of the Tehsil and door to door fumigation is being ensured. The seminar will be addressed by medical specialists to highlight the precautionary measures for staying safe from the disease. It will precede a public walk, he said.—Correspondent
