Man shot dead

MANSEHRA, Sept 16: A man was killed during a jirga in Naral Saree area of Gharihabibullah on Friday, police said. They said Mohammad Shazad had divorced his wife over unknown reason.

The families of Mohammad Shazad and divorced woman agreed to settle the issue amicably and called a jirga which was attended by people from both sides.

During the jirga both parties exchanged harsh words which led to the killing of Mohammad Riaz, who is father of Mohammad Shazad.

Gharihabibullah police registered FIR against Mohammad Faisal and his brother Mohammad Naseem. —Correspondent

Two prisoners released

TIMERGARA, Sept 16: The civil judge-cum-judicial magistrate, Timergara Islamuddin on Friday released two accused involved in minor cases during a court set up at the district jail.

Those who were released included Matiullah of Samar Bagh and Shahid Khan of Biarai Balambat, sources said.

Meanwhile, a young man missing for the last 17 months reached home on Friday.

Residents of Talash told this reporter Abdul Rauf of Soghalai village had mysteriously disappeared in April last year. He returned home on Friday, his brother Abdul Wahid said. “We thought he had been killed and we abandoned search for him,” he added.

Meanwhile, Malakand BISE organised a function on Friday to give Rs15,000 and Rs10.000 worth scholarships to top ten position holders. —Correspondent

Voters’ lists verification

GHALANAI, Sept 16: The door-to-door verification of voters’ lists would start in Mohmand Agency from September 22 and continue till September 30.

Assistant election commissioner, Ghalanai, Shahabuddin, told Dawn 553 officials would carry out the exercise, saying, there were 126,000 registered voters.

Mohmand tribesmen have urged the election commission to extend the date of verification of voters’ lists as a large number of people had either shifted to other areas or IDP camps due to military operation.

Meanwhile, ulema on Friday urged the tribesmen to actively participate in the upcoming anti-polio campaign.

Addressing a polio awareness session at Chanda, Maulana Samiul Haq, Maulana Amirullah and NRDF field coordinator Bashir Khan said Islam stressed treatment and prevention from diseases. They said all the Muslim countries except Pakistan were polio free. —Correspondent

Free dengue treatment

PESHAWAR, Sept 16: Senior oncologist and chairman Breast and Children Cancer Institute Prof Dr Gul Rehman and Eng Noor Rehman of University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar have offered free treatment of dengue fever patients.

In a statement on Friday, both the experts also pledged to treat dengue patients in other districts of the province on humanitarian basis and provide them free medicines.

Dr Gul Rehman said dengue fever was a preventable and totally curable disease and his team had its complete dealing technique, adding, if government provided them necessary facilities they would send their teams to other parts of the country. He advised dengue patients to visit Darul Madina Medical Centre in Sikandar Town, GT road Peshawar, or contact on cell numbers 0300-5904266, 0300-5682387. —Bureau Report

Curriculum revision

ABBOTTABAD, Sept 16: Speakers at a seminar on Friday called for inclusion of topics of tolerance and peace in the curriculum. The seminar titled “extremism and restrictions on freedom of expression” was organised by the National Commission for Peace and Justice at the Abbottabad press club.

Prominent among the speakers were JI leader Abdur Razzaq Abbasi, Maulana Aziz-ur-Rehman Haqqani, Zakir Paul advocate, Yousaf Benjamin and Elder Nazir.

It was demanded that all those laws which created disharmony among the different sects should be removed and minorities should be given equal status in the constitution.

They added Islam presented the true picture of democracy and teachings of Holy Prophet were ample example of democracy which needed full implementation at every stage as rights of every one were protected in Islam. —Correspondent

Gastro hits Lakki village

LAKKI MARWAT, Sept 16: Several residents of Jabukhel village have been hit by gastroenteritis, health officials said on Friday.

Reports say the village is under the grip of the disease for the last couple of days as no practical steps have been taken to control the epidemic. A number of villagers mostly children have been taken to different healthcare facilities.

A former nazim claimed the disease had killed two children in the village and the situation could worsen if prompt measures were not taken to overcome the disease. He demanded dispatch a medical team to the village forthwith.

DDO health Dr Abdul Rehman said Jabukhel BHU and other health facilities in the district were fully equipped to treat gastro patients. —Correspondent
