Policeman’s house looted

TAXILA, Sept 11: A gang of thieves looted the house of a policeman in Satellite Town in the limits of Wah Cantonment police station on Wednesday.

Imran Attari, patrolling officer of the National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) reported to the police that he was on duty while other members of the family had gone to meet the relatives when the thieves looted cash and other valuables worth Rs600,000 from his house. Wah Cantonment police registered a case and started investigation. — Correspondent

Cop injured in robbers’ firing

ATTOCK, Sept 14: A police constable was seriously injured as robbers opened fire at the police party in the jurisdiction of Rangu police station.

Police said on Wednesday that a gang of four robbers was putting hurdles at a road with an intention to loot the vehicles when a police patrolling party reached the scene. Seeing the police party, the robbers opened fire at the police vehicle and managed to escape from the scene. As a result, Constable Babar Hayat sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital where his condition was stated to be stable. The police registered a case and started investigation. —Correspondent

News item clarified

ISLAMABAD, Sep 14: The management of Shifa International Hospital while clarifying a news item published in Dawn under the title, ‘Cost of private health care – blocked road’, said that the Islamabad Traffic Police (ICT) made it one-way to avoid massive congestion as the hospital management had nothing to do with its blockade.

The hospital management in its press release claimed that there were many complaints about severe traffic gridlock outside hospital gates on the service road as it was quite difficult to approach the emergency in time.

It further said that hospital had not encroached on the green belt instead it had only hardened the shoulders along the road.— Staff Reporter

Protesters block road

CHAKWAL, Sept 14: The residents of Choa Syedan Shah kept the Chakwal-Choa road blocked for eight hours after highwaymen looted 10 vehicles early Wednesday.

Most of the passengers were shopkeepers who were coming to Chakwal and Choa Syedan Shah to buy food items.

The protesters gathered at Siraeen Chowk and blocked it by burning tyres and parking vehicles on it. The road remained blocked from 8am to 4pm. The protesters shouted slogans against the police. They said the police had failed to control robberies in the area. They alleged that the SHO of Choa Syedan Shah, Malik Arif, and in-charge of Basharay checkpost were patronising the robbers.

DSP Malik Iftikhar along with heavy contingent of police reached the scene and tried to negotiate with the protesters but to no avail. Later, DPO Syed Ali Mohsin rushed to the scene and suspended the SHO. The protesters dispersed after the DPO assured them that the robbers would be arrested within a wek. — Correspondent

ICCI polls

ISLAMABAD, Sept 14: Yasir Shakeel Butt was elected unopposed as president of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) for the 2011-12 term of the office.

The members of the Election Commission Nasir Khan, Ch Abdul Ghaffar and Ch Mazhar Hussain announced the result of the ICCI elections held at the Chamber House on Wednesday.

Asad Farid and Shahid Zaman Shinwari were elected as vice presidents of the ICCI. All the three newly-elected office bearers of the ICCI belong to the Founder Group.

Munawar Mughal, Chairman Founder Group while talking to the newly-elected office bearers said that the success of their candidates was only because of services rendered by the previous office bearers of the group.

“The business community has confidence in the Founder Group and the newly-elected office bearers need to maintain that confidence level,” he said.

Mahfooz Elahi, President, ICCI hoped that office holders-elect would maintain the good traditions set by the predecessors and the interests of the business community would be promoted by doing policy advocacy. — A Reporter
