Man kills brother

KOHAT, Sept 12: A man killed his brother and injured another over a property dispute in Thall Behzadi area of Kohat city on Monday.

Sardar Khan, who had a dispute with his family over property, allegedly shot dead his brother, Arbab Khan, and injured, Zareen Khan, in a guava orchard in Behzadi area. The injured, who received a bullet in his head, was referred to Peshawar. The police registered a case against the accused, who escaped the area after the incident.

Meanwhile, the security forces found a remote-controlled bomb and safely exploded it in Khurmatang area of the restive Darra Adamkhel on Monday.—Correspondent

310kg hashish seized

PESHAWAR, Sept 12: Peshawar police on Monday claimed to have seized 310 kilogram hashish from a dumper truck on the Ring Road, but the alleged smugglers fled the scene.

A police spokesman said the hashish worth millions of rupees loaded in a dumper (RIN-2863) had been brought from tribal area which was seized at the PAF check point in limits of Bana Mani police station.

The alleged smugglers, he said, had been identified as Taj Ali of Sango Sarband and Asghar of Bara Kajhori. He said despite efforts the accused managed to flee. A case against the accused was registered at the police station.—Bureau Report

Irregularities alleged

CHITRAL, Sept 12: The elders of Reshun village of upper Chitral have alleged irregularities in the tendering process of awarding contracts for construction of irrigation channels by the irrigation department and demanded NAB inquiry into it.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Syed Sardar Hussain Shah, Noor Alam Baig, Ahmed Nawaz Shah and others said the executive engineer of the department had set aside the departmental code and awarded the contracts to his favourites. They alleged the irregularities in the tendering process were committed in connivance with some contractors.—Correspondent

Militant attack

CHITRAL, Sept 12: The district amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Maulana Sher Aziz has demanded of the government to conduct judicial inquiry into recent attack by militants from Afghanistan and bring to book the officers responsible for the security lapse.Flanked by former district nazim Maghfirat Shah, former district amir Abdullah Jan and general secretary Prof Abdus Sami on Monday, Mr Aziz said the unpleasant incident was first of its nature in Chitral in which more than 30 personnel lost their lives.

Mr Aziz appreciated the visit of the army chief to Chitral and his announcement to take concrete steps to contain such incidents in future.—Correspondent

Training workshop

PESHAWAR, Sept 12: A six-day training workshop on Essential Maternal and Newborn Care (EMNC) for the health service providers of Bajaur and Orakzai agency concluded on Monday. Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Programme Fata in collaboration with the Unicef arranged the workshop.

A statement issued on Monday said the master trainers were Dr Sajida, Dr Wali Khan and Dr Ayub. Lady health visitors, female medical technicians, charge nurses and labor room assistants from the respective agencies participated in the workshop. The main aim of the training workshop was to give practical and hands-on training to the participants regarding the essential care of mother and child during the delivery so they can help reduce maternal, newborn and child health mortality and morbidity in Fata.—Bureau Report

Paramedics’ strike today

PESHAWAR, Sept 12: Paramedical Association of the Lady Reading Hospital will observe a strike today (Tuesday) to press the administration for acceptance of its demands.

A statement issued here on Monday said the association leaders had already presented demands to the concerned high ups but they did not pay any heed towards them and forced the paramedics to go for the strike.

The paramedical staff, IT association, class-IV, and sanitation staff will not attend duties and hold a protest demonstration outside the administration block. A general body meeting will also be held. The association has warned the strike is just a reminder of the demands to the concerned officials and if the issues were not resolved within 20 days the workers would observe complete strike.—Bureau Report Pharmacy department

MARDAN, Sept 12: Work on establishing a pharmacy department at the Anbar campus of the Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan was inaugurated on Monday, according to a press release.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Ihsan Ali inaugurated the work during a ceremony. The coordinator of Anbar campus, Dr Saleem, officials concerned and elders also attended the ceremony.

Mr Ihsan Ali said the department would be established keeping in view the requirements of the Pakistan Pharmacy Council. He said construction of the department would cost Rs80 million. He pointed out the pharmacy department would be properly equipped with the latest modern tools, laboratories, computer lab and libraries. He, however, made it clear the university would not compromise while imparting quality and modern education.—Correspondent

Water shortage

GHALANAI, Sept 12: The public health department of Mohmand Agency has failed to take steps to overcome shortage of drinking water in the area, which is persistent for the past two years.

Sources said the residents of Ghalanai, headquarters of Mohmand Agency, and its surrounding areas were facing acute shortage of drinking water.

A group of residents led by Malik Rashid Ahmad told this correspondent here on Monday the concerned department ignored their applications to start new water supply schemes in the area. They said the people covered several kilometers every day to fetch potable water for their domestic needs.—Correspondent

Dengue virus threat

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Sept 12: DCO Khan Bakhsh on Monday reviewed preparations to preempt spread of dengue virus in Dera Ismail Khan.

Chairing a meeting here on Monday, the DCO directed the health department to leave no stone unturned to cope with the possible threat of dengue virus.

The meeting among others was attended by EDO (health) Dr Ashiq Saleem, ADHO Dr Muzaffar Kundi, TMO Umar Khan Kundi, malaria control officer Dr Ikram Khan and other senior administration and health officials.

The DCO informed the meeting that spray of insecticides had already been carried out in the city. He urged the concerned quarters to create awareness among the masses regarding the spread of deadly virus as well as necessary preventive measures.—Correspondent
