Three killed in Karak

KARAK, Sept 9: Three persons, a woman among them, were killed in separate incidents on Friday.

Police said a woman, Bakhtawar Jana, resident of Sekot, Takht Nusrati tehsil, was shot dead inside her home by Tariq Mehmood, resident of Topi Kalay, who entered her home late at night. He also tortured her son Nabiullah. Sources claimed a dispute over women led to the killing.

In the second incident, Fida Mohammad, resident of Nari Panos, was allegedly shot dead by Raqiaz Khan and Mohammad Javed, over an old enmity.

In third incident, Ameenuallah died after falling from a hill while chopping trees in Mator area. —Correspondent

Man seeks brother’s release

PESHAWAR, Sept 9: A resident of Garhi Baghbanan, Nisar Khan, has appealed to the Peshawar High Court chief Justice and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor to help recover his kidnapped brother.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar press club on Friday the complainant said his brother had been kidnapped some three months ago allegedly by one Javed Iqbal who took him to Janakor area of FR Peshawar. “We have appealed to the government, police and elders but none of them extended support in this regard,” he said, adding, now the kidnappers were sending life threats to his family. —Bureau Report

Varsity achieves milestone

MANSEHRA, Sept 9: Various seminars, workshops and other programmes will be held on Saturday (today) to mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Hazara University.

An important meeting in this connection was held on Friday with Vice-Chancellor Syed Sakhawat Shah in the chair and attended by heads of almost all the 32 departments and students.Mr Shah said the university had played an important role in promoting higher education in Hazara Division by establishing two modern campuses in Havelian and Haripur in short span of time. —Correspondent

Shopkeepers hold demo

PESHAWAR, Sept 9: The shopkeepers of FC Plaza and Dil Jan Plaza on Friday took out a procession at Sher Shah Suri Road against the compulsory closure of their workplaces due to ‘security threats’. They were holding placards inscribed with demands for opening of the plazas and also shouted slogans against the Frontier Constabulary personnel for forcing them to close the shops.

The shopkeepers’ leaders Mohammad Usman and Jahanzeb Ali while talking to media persons said the plazas remained closed for the last three days due to which the shopkeepers were facing financial problems. They said hundreds of automobile mechanics, daily wagers and other technical workers had been rendered jobless. —Bureau Report

Road closure

ABBOTTABAD Sept 9: Residents of Jhangi and other surrounding areas have demanded reopening of the link road which has been closed by the administration of the Army Burn Hall School and College Abbottabad.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, they asked the chairman of the Board of Governors of Army Burn Hall Institutions, Commandant PMA Kakul to restore the facility in the best interest of the general public. They said due to closure of the road, the residents were suffering.

The said the road closure had also adversely affected the students of various schools and colleges because they had to take a longer route to reach their institutions. —Correspondent

Karachi unrest

TIMERGARA, Sept 9: The Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf provincial leaders on Friday said President Asif Ali Zardari, ANP’s chief Asfandyar Wali Khan and MQM’s self-exiled chief Altaf Hussain had been causing destruction and unrest in Karachi only to further their political goals.

Addressing a party meeting at Chakdara the provincial chairman of the PTI Asad Qaisar, chairman organising committee Shaukat Ali Yousafzai and others blamed the rulers for what they called turning the country into an American colony.

They said present rulers were blindly following dangerous policies of the US. —Correspondent

Employees’ salaries

PESHAWAR, Sept 9: Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA) on Friday warned of observing boycott of the classes of the public sector universities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa one day a week if the salaries of the universities’ employees were not increased by 15 per cent.

According to a press release issued here the decision was taken in a meeting of FAPUASA presided over by its provincial president Prof Dr Johar. The meeting was also attended by teachers of the public sector universities of the province.

The meeting also criticised the vice-chancellors of the universities for taking the issue lightly. —Bureau Report

New home secretary

PESHAWAR, Sept 9: The secretary sports and culture, Mohammad Azam Khan, has been transferred and posted as provincial home secretary.

According to a notification issued by the establishment department on Friday, Mr Azam Khan was replaced by the Commissioner Afghan Refugees, Jamaluddin Shah. Mr Azam Khan has also been assigned additional charge of the Commissioner Afghan Refugees. The post of provincial home secretary had fallen vacant almost a month ago when the then incumbent Arbab Mohammad Arif had gone abroad to attend the national management course. —Bureau Report

College on park land

MARDAN, Sept 9: Residents of Hoti area have joined hands to oppose the construction of a women’s degree college announced by the chief minister few months back for the Hoti locality in the city on the land of a public park.

The residents of concerned area led by former nazim of Hoti union council, Mohmand Khan, held a press conference here on Saturday against the construction of girls’ college on the park land and termed the act a sheer injustice with people of the area. —Correspondent
