Proclaimed offenders held

PESHAWAR, Aug 27: Several proclaimed offenders, including an alleged terrorist, Attaullah of Matni, were arrested on Saturday, claimed police. Attaullah was involved in a terrorist incident took place in 2008.

An official of Matni police said the accused was being interrogated. Similarly, he said, proclaimed offenders, Najam Shah, Rahim Shah, Qaim Shah and Mukhtiar, wanted to police in several cases of heinous nature, were also arrested.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman said proclaimed offenders Shahid and Mohammad Shah of Landi Arbab were arrested by Peshtakhara police. Similarly, Chamkani police arrested POs Mehfooz ur Rehman, Mohammad Jan and Hazrat Nabi of Budhni. —Bureau Report

Hashish, fake notes seized

PESHAWAR, Aug 27: Police claimed on Saturday to have arrested three accused and recovered 200 kilogram hashish and 7,000 fake currency notes from their possession.

A police spokesman said Haroon of Madina Colony Gulbahar was arrested by Faqirabad police with fake currency notes of Rs7,000.

The accused said the currency taken from tribal area was being shifted to different parts of the country.

In another case, two alleged narcotics smugglers, Mohammad Ikram of Rahim Yar Khan and Mohammad Tahir of Jhang were arrested for smuggling 200kg of hashish in a truck. They had brought the narcotics from Khyber Agency and were smuggling it to Punjab. —Bureau Report

Darul Qaza in Chitral

PESHAWAR, Aug 27: The Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan on Saturday ordered the establishment of a sub-registry of Mingora Circuit Bench (Darul Qaza) at Chitral for the institution of new cases there.

According to a notification issued by the high court’s Registrar Syed Mussadiq Hussain Gilani, the order was issued by the chief justice in exercise of his powers conferred by rule 11 of the Peshawar High Court (establishment of benches) Rules, 1982 and all other powers enabling him in this regard.

The Mingora Circuit Bench became operational few weeks ago when the chief justice started hearing of cases there.

Subsequently, other judges of the high court also visited Mingora and conducted proceedings in different cases. —Bureau Report

273 prisoners released

PESHAWAR, Aug 27: Around 273 prisoners have been released from different prisons throughout the province. Concerned district and sessions judges and judicial magistrates visited different prisons during last couple of days and ordered their release.According to a press release issued here on Saturday, the Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan had directed all the district and sessions judges/zila qazis and judicial magistrates concerned in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to visit all jails in their respective jurisdictions before Eidul Fitr for the disposal of criminal cases of all the under-trial prisoners.

Consequently, the said judicial officers visited the jails and redressed the grievances of the under-trial prisoners. Similarly, 273 under-trial prisoners involved in petty nature criminal cases were released. —Bureau Report

Attack condemned

PESHAWAR, Aug 27: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar has strongly condemned the attack from across the border at a security post in Chitral on Saturday and expressed his deep shock and sorrow over the loss precious lives.

Taking serious exception to the un-called for and unprovoked incident, the governor said, “This is indeed intolerable and unjustified act on part of terrorists and we would have to take special measures to further strengthen the security posts along the border.”

Mr Kausar, while expressing deep sympathies with the members of the bereaved families, also assured them that the sacrifices of their near and dear ones would never go in vain and strong protest is being lodged at every level. —Bureau Report

Exams schedule

PESHAWAR, Aug 27: The University of Malakand has announced schedule for the annual examination of BBA, BIT, MBA and LLB, 2011, starting from September 21.

According to a press release issued here on Saturday the roll number slips of the candidates would be issued to their respective colleges on or before September 10.

Moreover, roll numbers slips have been uploaded on the university web site http://www.uom.edu.pk. Furthermore, if a candidate didn’t receive his/her roll number slip up to 15 September through college they can contact the concerned official of the university on any working day during office hours. —Bureau Report

Importance of education

PESHAWAR, Aug 27: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar has said the government is giving great importance to higher education to improve socio-economic conditions of the people.

He expressed these views while talking to a group of students of Kohat University of Science Technology from Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who called on him at Governor’s House on Saturday. Provincial Revenue and Estates Minister Syed Qalb-i-Hassan was also present.

The governor appreciated the spirit and keen interest of the students in seeking latest knowledge in their respective fields.

Mr Kausar said the KUST was instrumental in providing education to students from the adjacent districts and tribal agencies.—Bureau Report

Fitrana, Eid gifts

PESHAWAR, Aug 27: Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT) said on Saturday it had distributed Rs7 million among the poor and needy people as Fitrana and Rs10 million worth of Eid gifts.

A statement issued here said the Fitrana amount was distributed among 15,000 poor and flood affected families of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh, Kashmir and Afghanistan. The Eid gifts included wheat flour, ghee, clothes, shoes, toys, juices, biscuits etc.

The trust’s chairman Mohammad Idress said well-off people should not forget the poor while celebrating Eid and extend a helping hand to them. —Bureau Report
