KARACHI, Aug 21: Twelve more people on Sunday lost their lives to the ongoing wave of violence in the city as targeted killings and roadside dumping of bodies after brief kidnappings showed no sign of abating.

The latest spate of killings has taken the five-day death toll to 85.

While some victims were kidnapped before being murdered and thrown by the roadside in different localities on Sunday, Orangi Town remained the most disturbed part of the city with at least half a dozen of deaths, police said.

The violence had erupted when the bodies of five young residents of Lyari had been found in PECHS and its neighbouring areas at the dawn of Aug 17. Since then the city has witnessed frequent use of rocket-propelled grenades in Lyari and its adjoining localities besides roadside dumping of gunny bags containing bodies with gunshot wounds and torture marks.

In what appeared to be a targeted killing incident, two activists of the Pakistan People’s Party were attacked by armed men riding a motorbike in Sector 13 of Orangi after sunset on Sunday.

The area police said 30-year-old Mohammad Shoaib was killed and Kashif wounded in the firing. “The victims were workers of the party’s city area, PS 95,” said PPP Karachi division information secretary Sohail Abdi.

A body bag was found in Sector 9 of Orangi Town shortly after Iftar, the area police said.

They added that the gunny bag was spotted near Ibrahim Ali Bhai School. The victim was trussed up, with a gunshot wound in the head and chest, the police said.

Earlier in the morning, the bodies of two youngsters were found in MPR Colony, an official at the Orangi Town police station said.

“The victims, later identified as Zeeshan and Faisal Qadeer, were in their mid-20s,” said Orangi Town SHO Jaffar Abbas.

He added that Faisal was a resident of Landhi and had come to the Orangi area to meet a friend. Both were kidnapped and later shot dead, the official said.

The police said that the victims were trussed up and bore torture and gunshot wounds on their bodies.

A cobbler was shot dead at his roadside makeshift shop within the remit of the same police station of Orangi Town.

Gohar Zaman, son of Jan-i-Maula, was at his shop near Qatar Hospital when he was shot dead by unidentified armed men riding a motorbike, said a duty officer of the police station.

The body was later shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

A few hours after Iftar, a young man was shot dead in a gun attack in Sector 7 of Orangi, said an official at the Orangi Town police station.

The victim remained unidentified till the late hours of Sunday.

Teen Hatti The body of a young man was found under the bridge of Teen Hatti within the remit of the Jamshed Quarters police station. The victim had not been identified till the filing of this report in the late hours of Sunday.

Lyari river The body of another young man was found in Machhar Colony along the Lyari river, police said.

The victim was shot in the head and chest, said an official of the Kalri police station.

Pak Colony Two people were gunned down in different parts of Pak Colony, the area police said.

A rickshaw driver was intercepted by armed men on Mangopir Road near Mashallah Milk Shop, said an official of the Pak Colony police station.

Two armed men fired at 48-year-old Mohammad Rustam, son of Faqeer Mohammad in the evening and fled, the station house officer said.

The rickshaw driver was rushed to the civil hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A body bag was later found at a deserted place near the Love Lane Bridge, Pak Colony SHO Shakil Sherwani said.

The body bearing torture marks was shifted to the civil hospital, he said, adding that the victim had not been identified yet.

Gulshan A young man was killed and his friend wounded in Gulshan-i-Iqbal early morning.

Samiullah Khan, 28, and his friend, Mehrban Bhatti, were passing through University Road on a motorcycle when they were intercepted by unidentified men near Samama Shopping Centre, said a duty officer of the Mobina Town police station.

The armed men fired multiple shots at the two men and fled.

Both the victims were rushed to a nearby private hospital, where Samiullah was pronounced dead on arrival while his friend was admitted for treatment.

Korangi A young man was killed in what police described as an exchange of fire between two political groups in the Bilal Colony area of Korangi.

The victim, identified as Saeed Alam, was killed in the firing, a senior police officer said.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.
