Policeman, outlaw killed

NOWSHERA, Aug 16: A constable and an outlaw were killed during an encounter between police and proclaimed offenders at Marati here on Tuesday.

The Marati police post personnel, during a routine patrol, signaled a vehicle to stop for search, but the inmates opened fire on the police, killing constable Sartaj on the spot.

The police also retaliated, killing an alleged outlaw, Zawer Khan, while his accomplices escaped.

The body of constable was shifted to the DHQ hospital Nowshera for autopsy. —Correspondent

Police checkposts

NOWSHERA, Aug 16: The district police will set up three checkposts in Nizampur area to curb smuggling on the route from FR Kohat to Peshawar and onwards to Punjab and other parts.

The checkposts would be established in Qamer Mela, Piran Border and Guji Khel in Nizampur area, said ASP Akora circle Ismael Kakar while addressing a press conference on Tuesday.

He said DPO Mohammad Hussain had issued directives to the police to keep a vigilant eye on activities of smugglers in Nizampur. He said most parts of Nazimpur, including Gandab, Tootkai, Qamer Mela and other localities, had been used for smuggling. —Correspondent

Technician abducted

KOHAT, Aug 16: Unidentified kidnappers abducted a technician, Moinullah Wazir, of People’s Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI) from basic health unit in Dodi Banda here on Monday night. The victim hailed from Waziristan Agency.

The paramedics association of Kohat announced to observe a three-day token strike from Aug 17 to Aug 20 to protest against the kidnapping of their colleague. The BHU from where the technician was kidnapped falls in the jurisdiction of Lachi police of Kohat.

The association at its meeting on Tuesday decided to meet the DCO, DPO and the DHO to apprise them of their security concerns.

They demanded inclusion of names of certain PPHI officials in the case for having personal grudge against the victim. —Correspondent

Man dies on road

LAKKI MARWAT, Aug 16: A man was killed and over a dozen passengers were wounded when a mini bus overturned near Wanda Zahid Gul on Indus Highway in the limits of Dadiwala police station on Tuesday.

Reports said the driver of bus (LHB-9280) lost control of the steering while saving a donkey on the road. As a result the bus overturned and a passenger, Sanaur Rehman, died instantly.

The body and two wounded passengers were taken to the nearby Naurang civil hospital while others were shifted to Bannu.

Meanwhile, police claimed arresting a dreaded outlaw and recovering a hand grenade from the hideout of another criminal in actions carried out in Gandi Umar Chikar and Adamzai localities. —Correspondent

Girl murdered

CHITRAL, Aug 16: A girl from Broze village of Chitral, who was married in Rabat area of Lower Dir, was allegedly murdered by her brother-in-law. Her husband is in UAE.

The relatives told reporters on Sunday last the in-laws of the deceased Khosh Noor Bibi called them to Rabat saying their daughter was sick.

They said when they reached there her in-laws handed her body to them without giving any reason of her death.

The relatives said the Khall police in Lower Dir refused to register case and carry out post-mortem.

Late, her body was taken to Chitral where a case was registered. Police said cause of death could be ascertained after post-mortem report. —Correspondent

Road blocked

PESHAWAR, Aug 16: The transporters on Tuesday blocked the main GT Road near Haji camp general bus stand after a traffic policeman allegedly beat up a driver.

Eyewitnesses said a bus driver, Izat Khan of Jamrud, was on his way from the general bus stand to Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency, when a policeman asked him to move towards the service road instead of the main road.

“The police official, Amir Zaman, asked the driver to move to the service road but the driver insisted on going to the main road to save time at which the official beat him up with a pistol’s butt, severely wounding the man,” a driver told this correspondent. —Bureau Report

No facility at RHC

KARAK, Aug 16: The rural health centre in Jandri union council has failed to deliver the required services to about 20,000 people of the surrounding villages.

Residents complained the situation had worsened due to the long and willful absence of the doctor and the paramedical staff.

They said the doctor visited the health centre only two to three times in weeks, which had created difficulties for the villagers.

They said the paramedical staff also visited the hospital on their sweet will. The in-charge doctor ran his own private clinic in the Karak city, they alleged.

The locals said the special secretary health department had promised to take action against the absent officials, but to no effect. —Correspondent

Gastro patients

BUNER, Aug 16: The monsoon season has given rise to gastroenteritis in Buner as the healthcare facilities, including the district headquarters hospital, have failed to meet the rush of people suffering from the common water-borne disease.

The DCO Syed Mujeebur Rehman on Tuesday called on an emergency meeting at his office in Daggar to review the overall situation.

The DCO expressed concern over the situation and directed line departments to take steps to control the epidemic. He directed the concerned departments to obtain samples of drinking water from various areas for chemical examination to find the cause of the disease. —Correspondent
