Three killed on road

NOWSHERA, Aug 12: Three persons were killed and 14 others sustained injuries when a passenger van collided with another vehicle on Friday.

Police said a Datsun pick-up (Swat-4970) carrying members of Tableeghi Jamaat to Kheshgi Payan from Nowshera collided with a Suzuki pick-up (Mansehra-4554) while trying to overtake it, killing three people and injuring 14 others.

The injured were taken to the district Headquarters hospital Nowshera where five of them were shifted to Leady Reading Hospital Peshawar in critical condition. —Correspondent

Woman shot dead

HARIPUR, Aug 12: A woman was gunned down while two others were wounded over a money dispute in Beer village on Thursday evening.

Police quoted Matloob as saying he had a dispute with the family of Abdul Hameed of the same village. He said on Thursday evening when he was on a village shop, Abdul Hameed arrived there and entered into an altercation with him.

Matloob said his (Matloob’s) wife Nazeeran Bibi and other relatives also reached there but all of a sudden Abdul Hameed opened fire at them killing Nazeeran on the spot and wounding his uncle Khwaja Mohammad and his wife Ghulab Jan seriously, who were referred to Ayub Medical Complex Abbottabad.

Meanwhile, Shafaqat and his friend Naveed were shot at and injured seriously by Mohammad Shafique in village Neelor Bala over a land dispute. —Correspondent

Corporal punishment

PESHAWAR, Aug 12: The Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (Sparc) has urged the government to impose ban on corporal punishment in schools, religious institutions and workplaces.

According to a press release issued here Sparc’s Peshawar programme manager Imran Takkar demanded of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to legislate and make laws after debating in the provincial assembly to control the menace. Sparc expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of corporal punishment throughout the province.

Mr Takkar said during the last six months 41 severe cases of corporal punishment were reported to Sparc from different parts of the province.

He also demanded of the elementary and secondary education department to help end the corporal punishment in schools through legislation, awareness and teachers trainings. —Bureau Report

PTI prepares for sit-in

PESHAWAR, Aug 12: A meeting of the working committee of the PTI, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, held here on Friday discussed reorganisation of the party and participation in the sit-in to be staged in Islamabad on August 14.

The meeting chaired by its provincial chief Asad Qaiser discussed reorganisation of PTI at provincial and district level and preparation for participation in the sit-in in Islamabad on the Independence Day, according to a press release.

The meeting was informed that PTI workers from different districts of the province will gather at Tarnol Motorway and then proceed to Islamabad.

Meanwhile, the PTI Chairman Imran Khan has nominated former ambassador Rustam Shah Mohmand as vice-president of the organising committee of party’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter. —Bureau Report

Salaries released

PESHAWAR, Aug 12: The salaries of 6,725 special police personnel have been released upon directives of the Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti.

After the CM directives the finance and police departments through collaborated efforts removed procedural hindrances in this regard.

Keeping in view Ramazan, Eidul Fitr and problems confronting the police personnel, the chief minister had directed police and finance departments to remove hindrances in this regard and ensure payment of their salaries. It merits a mention here that more than 6,000 personnel were recruited as special police force on contract for two years to help augment the fight against militancy. —Bureau Report

Arms seized

PESHAWAR, Aug 12: City police claimed on Friday to have foiled an arms’ smuggling bid and arrested a smuggler.

CCPO Imtiaz Altaf received information that a big cache of arms would be smuggled from tribal areas to Punjab. A police team was constituted headed by SSP Operations Ejaz Ahmed, which erected barricades on all entering points near the tribal belt.

The team stopped a suspicious car (No-PG-3214) and upon search recovered a Kalashnikov, five repeaters, a rifle, 18 magazines and 500 cartridges from its hidden cavities. The smuggler who was identified as Zartaj of Azakhel, Mattani was arrested.—APP
