Weapons seized

KOHAT, July 29: The law enforcement and intelligence agencies seized a huge quantity of arms and ammunition and arrested two accused on Indus Highway here on Friday.

The police received a tip that terrorists would enter Kohat from Darra Adam Khel region and try to smuggle weapons in a car. The police started patrolling of the entire border area and stopped a suspicious car near the Kohat tunnel toll plaza. Upon search the police team found 90 Kalashnikovs, 32 rifles, six repeaters, 29 pistols, 450 chargers, 8,500 cartridges of different bore, and 21kg hashish.

The alleged terrorists belonging to Charsadda district who were smuggling the consignment to Miramshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan Agency, were arrested and their vehicle was impounded by the police. —Correspondent

Judge visits jail

PESHAWAR, July 29: District and Sessions Judge Ziauddin Khattak visited the central jail here on Friday and ordered release of 23 prisoners involved in petty cases.

According to a press release issued here, he also examined the food being provided to the prisoners and took samples for laboratory test. He also visited the jail hospital where he talked to the patients who informed him about their problems. He directed the jail administration to provide all facilities to the patients.

The judge expressed displeasure over the absence of lady doctor who was recently transferred to the hospital but was yet to assume her duty. He ordered the director health to ensure presence of the lady doctor at the hospital. — Bureau Report

Goods recovered, 3 held

NOWSHERA, July 29: Three accused were arrested and goods recovered on Friday from Swabi and Nowshera in a theft case, police said.

Police started investigation following a complaint by Jehanzeb, supervisor Safehands Security System, regarding theft of goods including air conditioners, cables and other goods worth lakhs of rupees from Zone Tower on July 7.

After a thorough probe, the police managed to trace and arrest the culprits including Javid, former assistant engineer, Tahir, a resident of Col Sher Khan Kallay, Swabi and watchman Abdul Wahid. Police claimed that the accused had admitted to carrying out the crime.

Meanwhile, fire gutted a mobile phone shop in Ferdaus Plaza in Nowshera Cantt. Shopkeepers said the fire broke out due short circuit. — Correspondent

Disabled man seeks justice

PESHAWAR, July 29: A physically handicapped man has expressed grave concern over ‘illegal’ allotment of his over 4 kanal land at Abbottabad and appealed to the chief justice of Pakistan for taking suo moto notice of the case and award punishment to the concerned officials.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Friday, he said that his family had purchased the piece of land at Shimla Hill, Sherwan Road in 1995 from the daughter of Field Martial Gen Ayub Khan, Naseem Aurangzeb.

“In 1999, Ms Aurangzeb’s sister Jameela Bibi submitted an application seeking her share in the property and the officials allotted my land to her,” he claimed. He urged the Supreme Court chief justice to take notice of the ‘injustice’ and help him get back his land. — Bureau Report

Reforms in Fata

PESHAWAR, July 29: Civil society organisations from across the Federally Administered Tribal Areas have asked the government to immediately implement the political and social reforms in Fata that will pave the way for peace and development in the region.

These views were expressed at the end of a two-day “Assembly of Fata civil society organisations (CSOs)” organised by Community Appraisal and Motivation Programme (Camp) at a local hotel here on Friday. Some 200 members of the civil society organisations from Fata attended the workshop. The main objective of the CSOs assembly was to agree upon some common themes such as peace and security, human rights and democracy and political, economic and social rights for the people of Fata region and to discuss the small grants schemes and how to implement them in their respective vicinities. — Bureau Report

PPP students’ wing

PESHAWAR, July 29: Keeping in view the differences in the People’s Students Federation in parts of the country, the party Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari himself has intervened to apprise himself of the issues, sources said. A source in the Pakistan People’s Party said here the other day that several groups in the PSF were posing themselves to be the real representatives of the federation but the party leadership had no record about them.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone, he said, there were several groups in various educational institutions and some of them were even opposed to the provincial leadership and ministers and vying to serve their own interests. —Bureau Report
