NAWABSHAH, July 29: A Hindu youth who had first denied in the civil court and then admitted at a meeting of notables and police personnel to having embraced Islam and marrying a Muslim girl on Thursday evening, tried to commit suicide late in the night at the A-Section police station.

Nawabshah SP Aslam Langah told this correspondent on Friday that Ameet and his purported wife Erum had been taken to the police station after the meeting at the SSP office.

He said they were in protective police custody and were to be taken to the sessions court on Friday. But late in the night, Ameet (Muslim name Amir) tried to commit suicide, using shards of broken glass. He was taken to the People's Medical College Hospital.

He said that an FIR had been registered against him. He was produced in the sessions court which granted him bail.

The SP said doctors at the PMC hospital had referred Ameet to Karachi.

Ameet Kumar of Sakrand, son of goldsmith Gobind Ram, and Erum Gaho, a resident of Civil Lines Hyderabad, were in love and went to Karachi where Ameet embraced Islam on July 7, changed his name to Amir in the presence of Hafiz Haji Mufti Moein Ahmed, First Class Magistrate. Their Nikkah was solemnised by Ghulam Mustafa Abbasi in Saddar Karachi the same day.

When police produced Erum and Ameet in the Civil Court of Sakrand on Thursday Erum said she and Ameet had gone to Karachi where they got married in the presence of a Mufti after Ameet had embraced Islam but his family was now pressurising him through police to deny that the marriage had taken place and had got an FIR registered against her.

But Ameet said he had been given some seductives and made to sign fake marriage papers and change of religion documents.

But at a meeting of the town's notables held at the SSP office in the evening, Ameet admitted to have embraced Islam and changed his name to Amir and that Erum was his wife, according to SSP Nisar Ahmed Channa.
