Four die on road

KOHAT, July 23: At least four people, including a women and a child, were killed and ten others were injured in a collision between a dumper of OGDCL and a passenger van on Nizampur road on Saturday.

The Gumbat police said a Kohat-bound Suzuki pick-up carrying passengers collided with an OGDCL dumper coming from the opposite direction. As a result a minor, Rohail, Tajran Bibi, Nadeem and Deran Gul who were on board the pick-up died on the spot.

The Nizampur road links Kohat with Peshawar. The police said they had impounded the OGDCL vehicle and registered case on the complaint of the driver of the pick-up Roghan Shah. The injured were first taken to RHC, Gumbat but later those in serious condition were shifted to KDA divisional hospital. —Correspondent

NGO workers arrested

CHARSADDA, July 23: Four employees of an NGO were arrested and the office was sealed during a raid by the DCO Charsadda on Saturday.

The DCO Ajmal Khan along with a police party raided the office of Pak-Saudi NGO on Nowshera road and arrested four employees. The office was also sealed for alleged illegal activities and functioning without prior permission of the district administration. Officials of the NGO were allegedly involved in corruption and misappropriation of relief goods. The DCO said the NGO had no record of its work. —Correspondent

Tailoring rates fixed

PESHAWAR, July 23: A rate assessment committee was formed at meeting between the Peshawar DCO and representatives of tailors on Saturday to fix rates of stitching clothes.

It is first time that the district administration has heeded the concerns of the public regarding high prices charged by the tailors especially before Eid.

The meeting was attended by representatives of tailors of the city and cantonment bazaars.

DCO Peshawar Siraj Ahmed told Dawn the tailors had been divided in three categories including A, B and C in view of quality, income tax paid by the tailors, rent of their shops and number of labourers.

“We have also formed a rate assessment committee to decide the categorisation and rate of stitching clothes”, he said. The DCO is head of the committee. Pricelists would be displayed at each tailoring shop according to their category, he said. —Bureau Report

Construction of bridge

PESHAWAR, July 23: The formal launching of work on the long-awaited new bridge over Indus River at Khushalgarh in Kohat will start soon.

This was announced by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar during a visit to the site of the bridge on Saturday.

Talking to people on the occasion the governor said with the completion of the bridge, a new era of socio-economic uplift in the Kohat Division in particular and the province in general would begin, according to a handout issued here.

The project of vital importance would significantly contribute in generating job opportunities as it would act as a major supply route for oil and gas being produced in Karak and Kohat districts to the rest of the country, said the governor. —Bureau Report

Energy conservation

PESHAWAR, July 23: Pesco chief Mohammad Wali has asked the field officers to create awareness among consumers to conserve energy, whose supply against demand has dwindled substantially.

He issued these directives in a meeting of superintended engineers held here on Saturday, according to a press release. The meeting was held to review the progress on reducing line losses, recovery and provision of facilities to the customers.

Mohammad Wali expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of some divisions and sub-divisions and directed the concerned officials to improve their efficiency otherwise they would be taken to task.

He said with increase in the heat wave, the demand for electricity had increased resultantly Pesco had to carry out loadshedding for seven to eight hours. —Bureau Report

Demo against outages

PESHAWAR, July 23: Residents of various localities took out processions and blocked roads on Saturday against the prolonged power outages in their areas.

The main procession was taken out from Gulbahar, Hashtnagri and Nishtarabad where the people created hurdles in the smooth flow of traffic.

The people also shouted slogans against the government and Pesco for failing to ensure smooth power supply to the consumers. They said power supply remained suspended for most of the time every night forcing the families to spend sleepless nights. The children were the worst affected who could not sleep due to mosquitoes. —Bureau Report
