Two convicted

PESHAWAR, July 21: An additional district and sessions judge on Thursday convicted two persons in a murder case and sentenced both of them to 25 years rigorous imprisonment with fine of Rs200,000 each.

The court presided over by Hafiz Naseem Akber observed that the prosecution had proved its case against the two accused persons, Abdul Ghani and Aseel Zaman, residents of Bannu, and the evidence on record connected them with the commission of the offence.

The convicts were charged with the killing of a person named Dost Mohammad, who was running a shop, and firing at his uncle Gul Khan, in the jurisdiction of University Town police station on Mar 26, 2007. —Bureau Report

Water supply schemes

ABBOTTABAD, July 21: Work on six water supply schemes at a cost of Rs4.41 million has been completed in the city. As a result daily 1.2 million gallons of water is being released to the citizens by the tehsil municipal administration.

This was stated by Naeema Nisar Ahmed, PPP MPA, while addressing a press conference here on Thursday.

Ms Naeema Nisar said water supply schemes were completed at Nawan Sher, Naran, Dhobi Ghat, Stoney Jeheel and PMA Kakul. She added a new tube-well was being installed at PMA Kakul, two tube-wells were repaired with Rs1 million at Naran, damaged water supply line was repaired at Dhobi Ghat and two new tube-wells were constructed at Naran. —Correspondent

Centre for orphans

LAKKI MARWAT, July 21: The government has approved setting up a centre for the welfare of orphans in Naurang tehsil, said ANP district chapter president Sadruddin advocate on Thursday.

Speaking at public gatherings in Mammakhel and Dheri Kilay, he said the project would be completed with Rs28.2 million. Several elders announced on the occasion to join the ANP.

Mr Sadruddin said the ANP-led government had fulfilled the promises it made with the masses. “Besides getting the province’s share under NFC award the devolution as a result of the passage of the 18th amendment will open new ways of development in the province”, he maintained. He promised 50KV transformers and funds for maintenance of streets and water supply schemes for the villages. —Correspondent

Complaint cells

KOHAT, July 21: The DIG, inspection and inquiry, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, asked on Thursday people to file their complaints in the police complaint cells established at the district level without any fear.

The DIG, Sultan Hanif Orakzai, stated this during a visit to the offices of DIG, DPO, police stations and mall khana to check the records and buildings.

He said steps were underway to strengthen the existing complaint cell system for providing maximum relief to the people.

He said the people should first contact the senior district police officers regarding their complaints before sending them to the provincial offices. He said the hardened criminals would be expelled from their home districts to make them example for others. —Correspondent

Land for universities

MARDAN, July 21: The residents of Palato area on Thursday handed over 4,000 kanals of land to the authorities of Abdul Wali Khan and Agriculture Universities.

Officials of these universities said the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had purchased a total 5,000 kanals for the Bacha Khan Education Complex, which would house Abdul Wali Khan University, Agriculture University and Bacha Khan Medical College.

They said according to the government plan 2,000 kanals of land would be allocated each for Abdul Wali Khan and Agriculture Universities while 1,000 kanals would be for the Bacha Khan Medical College. —Correspondent

Thieves arrested

LAKKI MARWAT, July 21: Local police claimed on Thursday to have arrested two alleged thieves who were reportedly involved in stealing electric appliances and other material from mosques in Lakki city.

“After increase in theft incidents, the police deputed cops in plainclothes at public places and in localities where the mosques were situated to keep an eye on suspects”, said an official. He added the police were informed that some elements transported electric appliances to other cities every other day.

Acting on information police arrested two alleged thieves identified as Jamshed and Abdul Rehman from the main bus stop when they were loading stolen UPS and other appliances to a public transport vehicle. —Correspondent

Lawyers boycott courts

PESHAWAR, July 21: The lawyers boycotted courts on Thursday against the killing of their colleague, Adil Ahmad, demanding arrest of his killers at the earliest.

The boycott was observed in different parts of the province on the call of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council.

The deceased, Adil Ahmad, was killed a day earlier by unidentified persons near his chamber on the Charsadda-Mardan Road in Charsadda.

The lawyers mostly stayed away from courts including the high court and the subordinate courts, wearing black arm bands.

A protest general body meeting held at the district courts chaired by Razaullah Khan, president of Peshawar District Bar Association, urged the government to form a special investigation team to probe the killing. —Bureau Report

Cadets clinch top positions

KOHAT, July 21: The students of Cadet College Kohat clinched top three positions in the second year science group examination.

The controller of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Kohat released the list of top position holders who had been invited along with their teachers and parents on the occasion of the informal declaration of the results.

The gazettes of the results would be released today (Friday). Cadet Mohammad Sheraz Abbasi grabbed first position by securing 992 marks out of 1,100, Cadet Asad Naeem stood second with 985 marks and Cadet Noor Ahmed Rana third with 981 marks, respectively. —Correspondent

Results announced

PESHAWAR, July 21: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Board of Technical Education on Thursday declared results of D.Com (Diploma in Commerce) and DBA (Diploma in Business Administration) in which 71.75 and 55.34 per cent candidates were declared successful, respectively.

The controller of examinations said, a total of 13,257 candidates appeared in the D.Com examination out of which 9,512 were declared successful. Similarly, out of 2,033 candidates 1,125 succeeded in DBA examination. Mohammad Hassan of Muslim College of Commerce, Peshawar stood first getting 1,054 marks. In the DBA examination Maryam Kainat of Syed Ahmed Shaheed College of Commerce, Mansehra, stood first by receiving 1,209 marks. —Bureau Report
