Salary withheld

ATTOCK, July 6: A low paid woman employee of the District Population Welfare Department has not been paid the salary for the last five months.

Farhat Konain, an Aya (BPS-01) of the Population Welfare Department is being victimised for the reasons best known to the authorities concerned as they cited the shortage of funds for non-payment of the salary to the female worker. Owing to the non-payment of salaries, Farhat Konain is facing financial problems. She appealed to the authorities concerned to release the salaries to get her rid of the agonising situation. — Correspondent

Massive crackdown

ISLAMABAD, July 6: Islamabad police will launch a  crackdown against drug pushers, gamblers, liquor sellers and sex traders.

SSP Tahir Alam Khan while reviewing the performance of the capital police decided on Wednesday that the drive should be launched to purge the society of the anti-state elements.

He directed all the station house officers to curb the anti-social activities by launching massive action against the outlaws. Mr Khan also decided to issue show cause notices to the beat officers or SHOs in case of their negligence about the anti-social activities in their areas. He also directed the police officials to monitor the sluggish and corrupt cops and inform the high-ups for their involvement in any kind of illegal activities. — Staff Reporter

Polling in LA-37 postponed

MUZAFFARABAD, July 6: The AJK Election Commission on Wednesday again postponed polling in LA 37, Valley-II, on the report of the returning officer.

The polling in this constituency, located in Lahore, was suspended on June 26 due to serious law and order problem and the EC had fixed July 10 for re-polling. However, the PML-N candidate from the constituency filed a petition in the AJK High Court that polling should not be conducted until correction of alleged errors in the electoral rolls.

According to the sources in the election commission, the candidates had also expressed fear about violence in the absence of adequate security measures during polling.

Meanwhile, the AJK High Court is likely to announce its judgment on separate applications by the PPP and PML-B candidates in LA 6, Bhimber-II, wherein they sought re-polling in the entire constituency instead of only in 50 polling stations.

On June 28, the EC had announced that re-polling would be held on July 11 in 50 (out of 132) polling stations of LA 6, Bhimber-II where it was stopped due to violence on June 26. — Staff Correspondent

17 persons arrested

ISLAMABAD, July 6: The capital police on Wednesday arrested 17 persons and recovered liquor, beer, narcotics, crackers, four pistols, one gun, 10 small sacks of crackers.

A police spokesman said Shahzad Town police limits intercepted a group of four persons on suspicion. During their search 105 bottles of wine, 40 cans of beer, fake labels of imported liquor, utensils used in brewing wine were recovered.

The police suspected that the group is operating liquor distillery in the rural area of Shahzad Town and transporting the liquor and equipments for it.

Shalimar police on a tip-off raided a restaurant in sector G-10/4 and recovered 28 bottles of wine and 128 cans of beer which to the arrest of a Nigerian. Similarly, the Golra police arrested a drug peddler after recovery of hashish weighing 1.5kilogram from him.

The Golra police also intercepted two persons and recovered crackers filled in 10 bags and a 12-bore gun.

The Sabzi Mandi police arrested a group of four persons, including two women and recovered opium and hashish weighing 5.5kilgrams and 660grams respectively.

The Tarnol police recovered three pistols of 10-bore from three persons. The Nilor police also recovered a 30-bore pistol from man.

The Koral police arrested a man after recovering heroin weighing 215grams from him. — Staff Reporter

Rs60m for uplift schemes

RAWALPINDI, July 6: MNA Hanif Abbasi has provided Rs60 million to Chaklala Cantonment Board (CCB) for the development schemes in his constituency, NA-56.

The MNA got Rs10 million grant from federal government and Rs50 million from Punjab government for development works in NA-56 including construction of roads, streets, sewerage system and laying of water supply lines. Both federal and provincial government released the funds in the accounts of CCB.

CCB Officials told Dawn on Wednesday that the Military Land and Cantonments had directed the CCB to use Rs10 million of the funding, provided by the centre, within two months. — A Reporter
