5 of family killed on road

BATKHELA, July 5: Five people of a family among them a child were killed when a car they were traveling in veered off the road and fell into a deep ravine on Tuesday.

The ill-fated family was going to their village Jalalkot near Batkhela after getting a child examined by a doctor in Peshawar when the incident occurred. The driver lost control over the vehicle at a sharp turn on Malakand Pass.

The victims were identified as family head Adam Khan, his wife Bakht Zeba, son Sajjad, his minor daughter and grandson Nizar. Sajjad’s injured wife and the dead were shifted to Dargari and Batkhela hospitals. Meanwhile, medicine traders in Batkhela bazaar pulled down shutters and organised a protest demonstration after a trader was manhandled by FC officials on Tuesday. —Correspondent

Militants’ houses razed

KOHAT, July 5: The political administration demolished four houses of members of the outlawed TTP in Kohiwal area of Darra Adamkhel on Tuesday.

The political administration accompanied by the khasadar force demolished the houses of Zubair, Amjid, Mohammad Jan and Zubair from where attacks had been launched at the vehicles and security forces.

The Kohiwal area of Darra Adamkhel which borders the frontier region of Peshawar had become a centre of activities of the militants who hide in the houses there and then attack vehicles on the Indus Highway.

Meanwhile, a jirga of all the tribes of frontier region of Kohat resolved the dispute over the ownership of a mountain in Qasim Khel area on Tuesday. The dispute remained a bone of contention between the tribes of Qasimkhel and Manikhel for several years. —Correspondent

Father, daughter killed

PESHAWAR, July 5: A girl and her father were killed by relatives inside their house at Haryana village in Khazana area of Peshawar on Tuesday, police said.

An official of the Khazana police station, quoting a woman, Anwara, wife of an accused, Zarshad, said Noushad and his daughter, Sumbal, 19, were shot dead for allegedly having illicit relations.

The woman said her husband, Zarshad and his brother, Salahuddin, opened fire on their brother, Naushad, and his daughter killing them on the spot. The accused escaped soon after the incident. The official said a double murder case had been registered at the police station. —Bureau Report

ICRC efforts lauded

PESHAWAR, July 5: The Islamabad-based head of the ICRC, James Reynolds, called on the Governor Barrister Masood Kausar at Governor House on Tuesday.

Mr Reynolds who was also accompanied by deputy head of ICRC in Pakistan Ms Elena Ajmone Sessera remained with the governor for some time and discussed the role and services of the organisation especially for the internally displaced persons, according to a handout.

He also apprised the governor of the certain achievements and future plans of the organisation for serving the affected people. The governor appreciated the role and services of the ICRC and assured to extend all out cooperation to ensure its smooth working in future too. —Bureau Report

Nadra workers

PESHAWAR, July 5: All Pakistan Nadra Employees Association, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, has expressed grave concern over the delay in acceptance of workers’ demands and announced to observe hunger strike camp outside Nadra headquarters in Islamabad on July 20 to press their demands.

The decision was taken in a meeting of the workers here on Tuesday. The action committee chairman Mohammad Saleem said the association had already submitted demands to the relevant officials but they were least bothered to pay them attention.

The demands, he said, include promotions, upgradation of the staff, medical facilities, children scholarships, son quota in jobs, allotment in housing schemes, fixation of timings for workers, increase in allowances, regularisation of contract workers. —Bureau Report

Rocket defused

KOHAT, July 5: The bomb disposal squad defused an unexploded rocket in the fields on the Biana bypass road here on Tuesday. The rescue 15, after receiving information about presence of a bomb in the fields, dispatched bomb disposal squad to the area which defused RPG-7 rocket. The rocket had probably been fired from the nearby mountains of Darra Adamkhel and failed to explode, officials said.

Meanwhile, a tribesman was killed allegedly by his rivals near the Peshawar bus stand on Hangu road on Tuesday. The victim was identified as Saidullah, 25, from Kurram.

The police registered a case against Anar Gul and Mohammad, who, according to the victim’s uncle, had an old family dispute with them. —Correspondent

Hospital in bad shape

KARAK, July 5: Political leaders and social figures have expressed concern over the problems facing the DHQ hospital.

The district organiser of PTI Altaf Qadir advocate, former JI district president Maulana Samiur Rehman, former nazim Malik Rehman and district president of Khattak Ittehad Maulana Mirzaqeem told acting DCO Jamal Azmat on Tuesday doctors came to the hospital after 11am while the patients had to wait for hours.They showed resentment over the poor cleanliness situation, adding, even the bed sheets and drip stands had been stolen from the emergency unit. They held the EDO health and the DHQ MS responsible for the situation. —Correspondent

Gamblers arrested

PESHAWAR July 5: Capital city police on Tuesday arrested 12 gamblers besides seizing stake money and gambling equipments from their possession.

CCPO Liaqat Ali Khan after receiving a tip-off constituted a team under supervision of SSP Ijaz Ahmed Khan. During the raids conducted in the jurisdiction of Gulfat Hussain police station, the team arrested 12 gamblers identified as Ajmal, Bahadar, Zeeshan, Ehsan, Tanveer, Shehryar, Alam, Javed, Mohammad Walid, Ijaz Hussain, Syed Mohammad and Gulab Shah.—APP
