Two die in Kohat

KOHAT, July 4: A lawyer was buried alive when the roof of his house caved in due to heavy rain here on Monday.

The victim, Nadir Shah advocate, was alone at his home in the Qureshian Mohalla when the incident occurred. The body was pulled out of the debris after hectic efforts.

Meanwhile, a labourer from Upper Dir district was electrocuted while working in the Jungle Khel area of Kohat city on Monday. He was identified as Taj Mohammad.

He was busy working when he accidentally touched an electricity pole. He died instantly. The body was handed over to his relatives who took it to Upper Dir. —Correspondent

Funds’ embezzlement

SWABI, July 4: The anti-corruption officer in Swabi city police station on Monday registered an FIR against the principal of the Topi girls degree college for allegedly embezzling college funds.

Anjum Sardar of Maini village had submitted an application in the office of anti-corruption director, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, against the principal of Girls Degree College Topi, alleging she was involved in the embezzlement of funds.

The director forwarded the application to the district anti-corruption officials, directing them to conduct an inquiry about the alleged accusations against the principal. “We conducted the investigation and registered an FIR against the principal,” said an official. Another official said over Rs500,000 were misappropriated between 2007 and 2011. —Correspondent

PAC meeting

ABBOTTABAD, July 4: Public Accounts Committee of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has ordered the recovery of Rs10 million from Pakistan Railways against the excess fair charged for the transportation of wheat from Port Qasim in Karachi to Havelian and other parts of the province.

This decision was taken in the meeting of the PAC held here on Monday, presided over by Provincial Assembly Speaker Karamatullah Khan Chagharmati, who is its chairman.

The committee ordered inquiry into the loan of Rs142.840 million taken by the food department in 2004-05 which was not returned in time and mark-up of Rs0.945 million was paid. The meeting also took notice of shortage of wheat in Chitral and ordered action against the concerned officials. —Correspondent

Black day

PESHAWAR, July 4: Pakistan People’s Party will observe July 5 as the black day to condemn the former military dictator Gen Ziaul Haq for overthrowing the government of former prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto by imposing martial law in the country.

The PPP Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Syed Zahir Ali Shah on Monday directed his party activists and district level office-bearers to organise meetings in their respective areas to condemn the dictator and recall the services of late Bhutto.

He paid rich tributes to the PPP’s late chairman and said he had the credit of forming the country’s constitution, making the country an atomic power and holding the first-ever Islamic conference of the Muslim countries. —Bureau Report

Cultural assets

MARDAN, July 4: Unesco official Ms Kozue Kay Nigasta and representatives of Norwegian Embassy in Islamabad visited the Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan on Monday.

The visit was in connection with the evaluation and sustainability of the project “Mapping of Cultural Assets”. The project was funded by Norwegian government and completed by Abdul Wali Khan University in collaboration with the Unesco.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ihsan Ali, who was also the project director, briefed the delegation about the project, its significance and sustainability.

The visiting delegates appreciated the efforts made by the project team. —Correspondent

Constable attacked

NOWSHERA, July 4: A constable was injured when unidentified assailants opened fire over him in the Charat area here on Monday.

Officials said constable, Noor Rehman, was collecting information in the area on a tip-off that Taliban commander, Qari Irfan of Badrashi, was hiding there. He was admitted to Pabbi satellite hospital.

Noor Rehman lodged an FIR in the Pabbi police station, saying Mir Malang, Lal Baz, and Rawes, attacked him when he was on duty. A villager said the constable was not in uniform when he was attacked by the villagers as they mistook him as a kidnapper. —Correspondent

Written test

KARAK, July 4: As many as 1,420 candidates out of 3,522 have qualified the written test for the posts of different cadres of teachers, according to the result displayed at the education office here on Monday.

The test was conducted by the Educational Testing and Evaluation Agency (ETEA) for the posts of certificate teachers, Arabic teachers, physical education teachers, theology teachers, qaris, drawing masters and primary schoolteachers on June 28. The result remained 68 per cent.

The interviews of the successful candidates for certificate teachers would be held on July 12, physical education teachers July 14, theology teachers July 16, qaris July 19, drawing masters July 23, Arabic teachers July 25 and for primary schoolteachers on July 27. —Correspondent

Rescue 1122 gets new DG

PESHAWAR, July 4: The Director of Rescue Services 1122, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Dr Shams-ul-Haq, took over the charge as Director General of the service on Monday. A spokesman for the service said the home department had already notified promotion of Dr Shams to the new assignment.

Earlier, a district management group official, Khushaal Khan, headed the rescue service for one year, who was recently transferred and posted as political agent of the Orakzai Agency. After taking charge of his office on Monday, Dr Shams-ul-Haq said initiating the Rescue 1122 service in KP was great achievement of the provincial government. He said Rescue 1122 staff had performed duties with best abilities. —Bureau Report

‘Killers being protected’

PESHAWAR, July 4: One Ayaz Khan of Deri Kati, Nowshera, has accused the district police of avoiding arrest of the killers of his father and demanded action against some other people, including a provincial minister, in the murder case.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar press club on Monday the complainant said his father, Irshad Ahmed, a retired police officer, had been shot dead while his cousins, Rasheed Alam, Arshad and Fakhr Alam, were wounded on May last.

He alleged a group of people including Khalid Khan, Aziz Khan, Fazal-i- Subhan, Hamid, Arshad, and Naveed were involved in the murder, while some influential people, including provincial Minister for Excise and Taxation, Liaqat Shabab and his secretary, Noor-ul-Bashar, were supporting them. —Bureau Report
