Exam cheaters granted bail

RAWALPINDI, June 28: All the students and the supervisory staff who had been caught red-handed while cheating in the exam were granted bail by the special magistrate on Tuesday.

Special Magistrate Chaudhry Ismail Tasleem Akhter granted bail to all the 68 students, exam supervisors and their facilitators on surety bonds worth Rs10,000 each. Earlier, the police presented them before the magistrate for judicial remand but on the application of the accused, the magistrate granted them bail.

It may be mentioned here that a total of sixty eight students, a headmaster, a superintendent and two examiners were caught red-handed while cheating during a police swoop at a fake examination center set up at Government Shimla Elementary School, Arya Mohalla on Monday.

All of the students, the two examiners, Headmaster Hamad-ur-Rehman Lodhi and Deputy Superintendent Raja Abid were shifted to the Waris Khan police station and later a case was registered against them.— A Reporter

Body on journalist’s murder

ISLAMABAD, June 28: The secretary to the Judicial Commission probing the abduction and murder of journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad called upon the general public to provide any relevant information and material that could help in the investigation. “If someone from the general public, media, civil society, family, friends and acquaintances of slain journalist Saleem Shahzad has any information and material relevant to his abduction and murder, it should be sent to Federal Secretary Information & Broadcasting and Secretary to the Judicial Commission Taimur Azmat Osman,” said a government spokesperson in a statement issued here on Tuesday.

Any information and material related to the abduction and murder of Syed Saleem Shahzad must be accompanied by a statement in the written form, duly verified, that affirms authenticity of the information and material as well as the responsibility of the claimant, said the statement.

Moreover, all such information and material must be submitted at the Commission Secretariat, Pakistan Television Corporation (PTVC) Headquarters, Islamabad, by 5th July 2011, said the statement. — A Reporter

Rains may cause flood ISLAMABAD, June 28: The Met Office predicted widespread monsoon rains/thundershowers in upper Punjab including Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Lahore divisions during next 36 hours.

The Met Office spokesman said that the heavy downpours might cause urban flood in some of the said areas of upper Punjab during the period.

Monsoon has already started over upper parts of Pakistan and more monsoon currents of moderate to heavy intensity are penetrating in parts of Punjab that may produce widespread heavy rains during next 36 hours (Wednesday/Thursday).

While scattered monsoon rains are also expected in rest of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, upper Sindh (Sukkar and Larkana divisions) and some northeastern parts of Balochistan (Zhob, Sibbi and Nasirabad) during the period.

The monsoon rainfalls recorded in last 24 hours are as follows; Gujranwala 75mm, Rawalpindi-68mm, Islamabad-59mm, Kotli-32mm, Sargodha-30mm, Gujrat-30mm, Murree-28mm, Gari-Dupatta-26mm, Lahore-25mm, Attock-15mm, Abottabad-11mm, Swat-11mm and Sialkot-10mm. — A Reporter

AJK reserved seats

ISLAMABAD, June 28: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has sought applications for reserved seats of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly (AJK LA) from the party workers.

PPP Secretary General Jehangir Badr asked the party workers to submit applications for reserved seats of the AJK Legislative Assembly by July 5.

He also directed the candidates to submit a Rs30,000 bank draft with the application for five women seats and one each seat for technocrats, overseas, Ulema and Mashaikh.

PPP emerged as the single largest party in AJK Legislative Assembly elections 2011 held on June 26 by bagging 20 seats. — A Reporter

FATEHJANG, June 28: The press club elections were held here on Monday evening.

Qazi Muhammad Safdar Qureshi of Dawn and Haji Abdul Rasheed of Al-Akhbar were elected as President and General Secretary respectively.

The other office bearers are Farhat Ali Khan (Dunya TV), Senior VicePresident, Liaquat Khan Bajoori (Assas), Vice President, Malik Sahadat Ali (Jinnah), Additional General Secretary, Dr Raza Awan (Taseer), Secretary Finance, Malik Aitzaz Ahmad, Secretary Information.
