KARACHI, June 26: An employee of the Sindh Assembly was killed and his associate was wounded when unidentified men opened fire on them in a Saddar area on Sunday night, police said.

They said the incident occurred near the passport office, where Abdul Jabbar and Mohammad Rehman were attacked.

The police said that reportedly two suspects riding on a motorcycle arrived there, fire at them and fled.

A duty officer at the Preedy police station said that both the victims were employees of the Sindh Assembly and lived in the MPAs Hostel.

They were walking back to the hostel from Saddar when the incident occurred, the duty officer said.

The victims were taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where Jabbar was pronounced dead on arrival while Rehman was admitted for treatment.

The victims hailed from Sukkur, the police added.

Over 20 pushcarts burnt

An unidentified man was killed and around 20 to 25 pushcarts were set on fire by unidentified men in Bilal Colony within the remit of the Awami Colony police station in Landhi on Sunday night, police said.

They said the incident was apparently a result of tension between two political groups in the area.

They said the two groups traded fire in Bilal Colony which resulted in the death of an unidentified man.

Following the killing, a number of unidentified men went on the rampage and set fire to around two dozen pushcarts of vegetable sellers in the area.

Tension gripped the locality and people remained indoors following the killing and the arson attacks.

Sources said the police reached the scene, but they were unable to control the situation.

Later, the police took the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities.

Till the filing of this report, representatives of both groups were present in the SP office, who reportedly was trying to broker a settlement between them.

Man shot dead

Unidentified armed men shot dead a man in Firdous Colony in the limits of the Gulbahar police station on Sunday, police said.

They said that 25-year-old Riaz Ahmed was riding a bike near Salman Heights when some unidentified armed men in a car opened fire on him.

He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he died, the police added.

After the post-mortem the body was handed over to the heirs. The police registered an FIR (96/2011) against unidentified killers.

Three die in road accidents

At least three people were killed in two separate road accidents on Sunday.

Two men died in a road accident on Sunday night near New Sabzi Mandi, Edhi rescue service officials said.

They said that 30-year-old Irfan and 35-year-old Yameen were riding a bike on the highway near the New Sabzi Mandi when a fast-moving vehicle hit their bike. The victims received severe injuries and died on the spot.

The bodies were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities and later handed over to the relatives, the rescue service officials added.

In the other accident, a man was knocked down and killed by a fast-moving vehicle in Baldia Town on Sunday morning, Edhi ambulance service officials said.

They said 30-year-old Nadir was hit by the vehicle in Sector-9 of the area. He received severe injuries and died on the spot, they added.

The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities and later handed over to the heirs.

Three drown in sea

Three young people drowned in the sea in separate incidents along the city beach on Sunday.

A teenage girl drowned off the Hawkesbay beach, Edhi rescue service officials said.

They said that Rukhsar, daughter of Abdul Majeed, drowned in the sea near the Emergency and Rescue Centre of the city government at Hawkesbay.

The family had gone for a picnic on the beach.

The body was recovered and shifted to Murshid Hospital for medico-legal formalities and later handed over to the heirs.

In another incident, 28-year-old Bilal Awan drowned at the Paradise Point, sources in the rescue service said.

Bilal was swept away by a strong current, they said, adding that after hectic efforts by lifeguards, his body was fished out.

In the third incident, a 10-year-old girl drowned off the Clifton beach on Sunday.

Sources in the rescue service said that Seher had come to the beach with her family but she was swept away by a strong current into the sea.

Her corpse could not be found till Sunday night, they added.
