Six killed on road

ALPURI, June 24: Six persons were killed and ten others wounded when a pick-up van plunged into a deep ravine in Thakot area here on Friday.

Police said a Datsun pick up (DIR-1774), going from Besham to Thakot, fell into a deep gorge at Batok, killing six people on the spot and injuring ten others.

The deceased included Shah Faisal, Omar Nawaz, Sultan, Khali Khan, and his son Fayyaz Khan.

The injured were shifted to Besham hospital from where the critically injured were referred to Abbottabad Medical Complex.—Correspondent

Policeman drowns

SWABI, June 24: A junior police officer drowned in Gohati canal here on Friday.

Hawaldar Nisar Mohammad was going home in Naranji area on his motorcycle, which veered off the road and plunged into the canal in Qaziabad area. Locals made efforts to fish out the body but could not find it till filing of this report.—Correspondent

Labourers’ concerns

NOWSHERA, June 24: The provincial government is urged to interfere in the affairs of the Rehman Cotton Mills to solve the ongoing tussle between the labourers and the management as the latter is not ready to accept genuine demands of the poor workers.This was demanded in a meeting of Mutahida Labour Federation held here on Friday chaired by provincial president, MLF, Mohammad Iqbal.

They demanded of the government to interfere in the affair of mills otherwise future of 1,500 workers would be at risk. They accused the management of forcing some 200 employees to resign while terminating the others.

They asked the management had to pay the labourers their withheld salaries otherwise they would go to any extent in getting their rights.—Correspondent

Power breakdown

MIRAMSHAH, June 24: Consumers staged a protest demonstration against hours long power breakdown in Miramshah, North Waziristan Agency on Friday.

Tribesmen brandishing automatic weapons took out a protest rally and assembled in front of the press club.

They complained that Tribal Electric Supply Company had started unscheduled loadshedding and in some areas electricity remained suspended for 22 hours.

Chanting slogans against the Tesco and political administration, they said power fluctuation had damaged electric appliances.

They said the company had also suspended power supply to main hospital in Miramshah and patients were suffering.

They demanded of the government to fix schedule for the loadshedding and Tesco should remove faulty cables and transformers.—Correspondent

‘Fake’ case

PESHAWAR, June 24: A resident of Hashtnagri, Fazal Maula, has accused the SHO of Gulfat Hussain police station of breaking locks of his house, taking away household items and registering fake case against him.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar press club on Friday the complainant said he had done nothing wrong but the SHO Asif Sharif had illegally entered his house when his family was mourning the death of a relative in another locality.“The SHO also showed recovery of two kilogram hashish from my residence,” he said, adding, the case was baseless and he was innocent.

He was also accompanied by several elders of the area.—Bureau Report

Police professionalism

KOHAT, June 24: The deputy inspector general of police, Kohat region, has asked officials to improve their professionalism in both operational and investigation sections for bringing the militants to justice.

During a briefing by the police chiefs of Hangu, Karak and Kohat on Friday on hurdles in the way of providing security to the people and installations, he approved checkposts especially in the Kohat city, on the Friendship tunnel and on the Kohat-Parachinar road.

The meeting was attended by the DPOs of Kohat, Hangu and Karak, Mubarek Zeb, Abdur Rasheed, Sajid Momand, SPs of investigation wings of Karak and Hangu, Saeed Kundi and Iftikhar Ahmed and DSP legal of Kohat Qazi Sajid.—Correspondent

Arms seized

KOHAT, June 24: The police on Friday foiled an attempt of smuggling huge quantity of arms to down country from Darra Adamkhel and arrested two smugglers on Indus Highway.

Officials at a checkpost at the Kohat tunnel toll plaza stopped a suspicious pick-up number RIN-1265 and after searching it found huge quantity of arms concealed inside drums. The arms seized included a Kalashnikov, six rifles, one sten gun, 124 pistols, 22 folding butts and 10,500 cartridges. The police arrested the smugglers identified as Zia Mohammad and Mudassar, residents of Tangi, Charsadda district.—Correspondent

Tight security

PESHAWAR, June 24: The Friday prayers were offered under tight security in the provincial metropolis after the reports about entry of a suicide bomber into the city, officials said.

An official said there was information that a suicide bomber carrying explosives in an ice-cream handcart would target some important installations or busy commercial areas. A source said they had information about a possible attack on occasion of Friday prayers and thus tight security measures had been adopted to avert any untoward incident.—Bureau Report

Family denies allegations

PESHAWAR, June 24: A family source of recently appointed chairman, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Service Commission, Sahibzada Riaz Noor, has strongly rebutted the allegations leveled against him by his brother, Fayyaz Noor, at a press conference the other day.

The family source while reacting to the allegations described the charges as baseless, unfounded, concocted, malicious and personally motivated.—Bureau Report

Power pylon repaired

PESHAWAR, June 24: Peshawar Electric Supply Company on Friday claimed to have completed work on the damaged tower No.265 of 500KV Tarbela-Peshawar transmission line.

A spokesman said the repair work was difficult to be completed in two weeks but the technical staff worked hard and completed it within five days, restoring power supply to the affected areas of Peshawar and adjacent districts on permanent basis. — Bureau Report
