KARACHI, June 22: An anti-terrorism court on Wednesday supplied copies of the statements of witnesses and other documents to seven suspects, including six personnel of Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, allegedly involved in the June 8 shooting death of a young man.

All the suspects — Sub-Inspector Bahaur Rehman, Lance Naik Liaquat Ali, constables Mohammad Tariq, Manthar Ali, Shahid Zafar, Afzal Khan and a private contractor, Afsar Khan — were produced before the ATC-I on Wednesday.

The court supplied the suspects the copies of documents under Section 265-C (supply of statements and documents to accused) of the criminal procedure code.

Judge Bashir Ahmed Khoso of the ATC-I adjourned the hearing till Thursday for the indictment of the suspects and directed them to engage a counsel for their defence.

Advocate Ameer Nawaz, meanwhile, filed vakalatnama (power of attorney) on behalf of suspect Afsar Khan.

According to the charge-sheet, young Sarfraz Shah was shot at and then left to die allegedly by Rangers personnel inside the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park within the remit of the Boat Basin police station on June 8.

The Rangers had initially claimed that the youth was armed and killed in an encounter. However, the investigation officer stated in the charge-sheet that it was evident from the video footage aired by television channels that the victim was unarmed and shot to death by the Rangers men at point-blank range as he first pleaded for mercy and later begged to be taken to hospital.

He added that two cases lodged against the victim on the complaint of suspect Afsar Khan were baseless and the court concerned would be approached to register a case against Sub-Inspector Bahaur Rehman under the Pakistan Arms Ordinance, 1965 since he handed over to police a pistol claiming that it was recovered from the victim youth.

The court would also be approached for action against complainant under Sections 182 (false information with intent to cause public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person) and 211(false charge of offence made with intent to injure) of Pakistan Penal Code. The victim had no criminal record, the IO said.

The suspects have been booked under Sections 302 (premeditated murder), 36 (effect caused partly by act and partly by omission) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 (punishment for acts of terrorism) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

A case (FIR227/2011) was registered at the Boat Basin police station on a complaint of the victim’s brother, Saalik Shah.
