Woman’s nose chopped

HARIPUR, June 20: An angry husband here on Monday chopped the nose of his wife with a knife, suspecting her of illicit relations with a man.

The accused, Mohammad Riaz of village Choee, and the man suspected of having illicit relations with his wife, Ashiq Hussain, had been arrested, and criminal case was registered against them, according to Khanpur police.

The injured woman was taken to tehsil headquarters hospital from where she was referred to DHQ hospital.

Meanwhile, a minor girl, Eman Zehra of Mohalla Imam Bargah Julian, was killed when a speeding truck ran over her while crossing Khanpur-Taxila road near Julian village on Monday.

The driver who escaped from the scene was later pardoned by the heirs of the deceased girl.—Correspondent

Snatched cars recovered

NOWSHERA, June 20: The National Highways and Motorway Police on Monday recovered four snatched cars and arrested four car-lifters.

A spokesman said a team of Motorway police signaled three cars going at a high speed, but the drivers sped. The police intercepted the cars after a brief chase and arrested three accused, Rafiullah, Imran Khan and Wahidullah, residents of Peshawar. He claimed during initial investigation the accused confessed to snatching the cars from the limits of Westridge, civil lines and airport police stations in Rawalpindi.

The spokesman said police signaled a corolla car but the driver tried to run away. The police chased the car and arrested Nasir Khan of Mardan. The recovery was made on a tip-off by the Islamabad police. The car was stolen from Zabzi Mandi police station, Islamabad.—Correspondent

Cattle vaccination

ALPURI, June 20: The district administration on Monday started cattle vaccination campaign as a precautionary measure ahead of monsoon season.

The vaccination drive was kicked off in a ceremony held in Shahpure area chaired by DCO Mohammad Ayaz Khan. Previous year the poor people, particularly the farmers, had lost cattle worth Rs7 million in the devastating floods and post-flood diseases.The vaccination drive was launched with the support of livestock department and community uplift programme.

Addressing the ceremony DCO Mohammad Ayaz said the government would help the poor farmers at all levels. He urged the civil society and public to come forward and help the government in sensitising the masses about how to protect their cattle in rains and floods. He urged the masses to vaccinate their cattle before coming of monsoon in which cattle could be attacked by multiple diseases.—Correspondent

Abducted man untraced

PESHAWAR, June 20: Relatives and children of a missing person, Gulzar Jan of Kurram Agency, staged a protest demonstration here on Monday against government failure to recover him and appealed to the Peshawar High Court to take notice of the matter.

Sahib Jan was leading the protesters who were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans for recovery of Gulzar Jan.

Talking to reporters, Sahib Jan said Gulzar Jan, who returned from Saudi Arabia on March 28, last year, was kidnapped in the jurisdiction Badbher and Matani police stations, while going to Peshawar from Kohat. He said the police were least bothered to take steps for his recovery.—Bureau Report

Destroyed tower

PESHAWAR, June 20: The Peshawar Electric Supply Company has said work on the blown up 500KV Peshawar-Tarbela transmission line has been started and the process would hopefully be completed within a couple of days.

A spokesman on Monday said the transmission line tower No 265 had been blown up by miscreants near Taru Jabba on Sunday night, leading to low voltage and additional loadshedding in Peshawar.

Resultantly, he said, Peshawar and adjacent districts were being fed from alternative sources, hence low voltage and additional loadshedding.—Bureau Report

NGO to continue activities

KOHAT, June 20: The Medecines Sans Frontieres or Doctors without Borders has vowed to continue its activities in the conflict-hit Hangu despite threats to staff by the miscreants.

An official of the MSF told Dawn on telephone here the organisation solely relied on financial contributions from individuals around the world, and did not take any funds from government or military to fund its activities in Pakistan. The official said despite the current tense security situation in Hangu district, MSF will maintain its emergency medical and surgical support to Hangu hospital where medical needs were acute.

He said in collaboration with the department of health, the MSF had already treated more than 17,500 patients in the emergency room, and conducted over 800 emergency surgeries since May 2010. — Correspondent

Relief goods distributed

PESHAWAR, June 20: A non-governmental organisation, Zai Saddique Foundation, Islamabad, on Monday distributed relief goods among 600 flood affected families of various villages located on Warsak Road.

The foundation distributed the goods under directives from Speaker, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Karamatullah Khan Chagharmati. The items include 400 mosquito nets, 400 blankets and 400 bed sheets. Affected families from Petwar, Shahi Bala and Gahri Amir Khan villages received the relief items.— APP
