PESHAWAR, June 11: At least 32 people were killed and over 90 others injured when two blasts ripped through a market in Peshawar late on Saturday night.

According to police and eyewitnesses, a small blast took place just after midnight which drew rescue workers, police and journalists to the place. A few minutes later a big explosion rocked the cantonment’s Khyber Super Market, a commercial and residential area. Two of the six journalists injured in the second blast later died in hospital. One of them was identified as Asfandyar Chamkani.

The dead and injured were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital. The condition of 21 injured was stated to be critical.

Agencies add: “One of the blasts was quite big but I can’t say about the nature of the blasts,” police official Ejaz Khan said.

Another police officer, Dost Mohammed, said initial reports suggested the second blast was caused by explosives placed in a vehicle and detonated by remote control. The source of the first explosion is still unknown.

The attack took place across the street from the offices of the top political agent to Khyber. Housing for army soldiers is also nearby.

Police said they were investigating the cause of the blasts.
