Factory worker dies

HARIPUR, June 10: A factory worker was killed when he was hit by an iron rod at a steel mill in Hattar Industrial Estate here on Friday.

Hattar police and factory sources said Hayat Shah, 28, a resident of Kohistan, was busy in his work in the mills when a hot piece of iron bar pierced through his chest injuring him seriously. He was taken to Women and Children Hospital but could not survive.

Meanwhile, a man was shot dead over ownership of a piece of property in Noordi village on Friday. The victim was identified as Mohammad Waqar Khan. —Correspondent

NAB references

PESHAWAR, June 10: The National Accountability Bureau on Friday filed references against two officials of Mansehra Development Authority (MDA) charging them of possessing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.

According to a press release, after completion of investigation the NAB filed a reference of Rs16.3 million against divisional accountant, Syed Mazhar Hussain Shah for accumulating assets grossly disproportionate to his known sources of income. The accused was arrested in March last.

A reference of Rs2.04 million was also filed in the accountability court against Mohammad Saeed Khan, building inspector at MDA.

Investigations revealed his assets were grossly disproportionate to his known sources of income. He was also arrested in March last. —Bureau Report

Boy killed on road

KOHAT, June 10: A boy died and his brother got seriously injured when a speeding van hit them on the Kohat-Peshawar bypass road on Friday.

The Jungle Khel police arrested the driver, Said Mir, resident of Kurram Agency, and also impounded the vehicle number C-3059.

Eyewitnesses said the speeding vehicle went out of control of the driver and knocked down two brothers on the roadside. Irfan, 10, died on the spot while his brother was shifted to KDA hospital in serious condition.

The police registered case against the driver and sent him to jail. —Correspondent

Policemen suspended

MARDAN, June 10: Five police officials were suspended and a case was registered against them after they allegedly facilitated a culprit being treated at the district headquarters hospital under their supervision to flee from the hospital early on Friday.

According to a report by the hospital police in-charge ASI Zahir Shah Khan, five police constables -- Riaz, Mushtaq, Shakeel, Naeem and Jaffar Shah – who were deployed at the hospital for the custody of accused, Abdul Malik, a resident of Jawar area of Buner district, facilitated the accused to flee from the hospital.

Zahir Shah said the case against the said police officials was lodged with concerned city police station and further investigation was underway. He added that the accused was wanted in various cases. —Correspondent

Cheques distributed

KOHAT, June 10: The government on Friday distributed Rs5.3 million among the families of 16 victims and seven injured persons of a recent suicide blast in Hangu. This was the first installment of the compensation announced by the government.

Thirty-six people including three policemen were killed and 55 people injured on May 26 when a suicide bomber rammed his Toyota pick-up laden with 450kg explosives into a police checkpost.

The District Coordination Officer, Hangu, Adil Siddique gave cheques of Rs300,000, and Rs100,000, respectively to affected families at a ceremony. —Correspondent

Parents-teachers councils

CHITRAL, June 10: EDO, Education, Siraj Mohammad, has asked the chairmen of parents-teachers councils (PTCs) to play their defined role and be vigilant to raise the standard of education in the public sector schools.

Addressing the chairmen of the PTCs in Chitral, Booni and Drosh here the other day, he said the PTCs were the devices to improve the falling standard of education in the government-run schools.

He said the chairman of a school PTC had been authorised financial powers to ensure judicious utilisation of funds.

Mr Ahmed said the reason behind the faltering standard of public sector schools was the inactivation of the PTCs.

Meanwhile, the chief minister polo tournament started on Friday, which is being participated by more than fifty teams drawn from across the district. —Correspondent
