KARACHI, May 29: Tension gripped the neighbourhood after two persons were gunned down and about six others were wounded in Bhitai Abad, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, in a land dispute between two political groups on Sunday, police said.

They said the incident was sparked when activists of the Awami National Party attacked workers of a Sindhi nationalist party who were overseeing the construction of a wall on a plot in the remit of the Sachal police station.

As a result of the firing, Mumtaz Magsi suffered a fatal bullet wound, and Shahnawaz, Mehboob, Abdul Rasheed, Liaquat and Akbar were also wounded.

The victims were taken to a nearby private hospital, where Mumtaz Magsi was pronounced dead. The others were admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Following the incident shops and other commercial activities were shut down as tension prevailed in the area.

Police said that in the evening, another clash between the two groups took place at the same spot in which another activist of the Sindhi nationalist group was gunned down.

Police said the victim was identified as Rahat Commando. They shifted the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities.

Following the incident there were reports of intermittent firing in the area. Police and Rangers personal were sent to the area to control the situation.

Young man shot dead

A young man was killed by unknown persons in the limits of Sharifabad police station on Sunday.

Police said the incident occurred in C Area, Liaquatabad, where unknown persons riding a motorcycle opened fire on Liaquat Ali, son of Karim Bakhsh.

Police said the victim died on the spot. His body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital     (ASH)for legal formalities.

Police said the victim was a suspected drug peddler and had been arrested twice in the past for the crime.

Watchman killed

A watchman was killed in firing by unidentified gunmen on Sunday in Buffer Zone in the remit of Taimuria police station.

Police said 30-year-old Noor Mustafa was passing through street 9 of Buffer Zone, North Nazimabad Block N, to buy breakfast when two unidentified armed men riding on a motorbike opened fire on him.

As a result, he died on the spot. The body was shifted to the ASH for medico-legal formalities. The deceased was a watchman at house 436/A, street 11 of Buffer Zone, police said.

No case had been registered till the filling of this report.

Woman strangled

A woman was strangled in her flat on Sunday evening at Al-Azam Square, Liaquatabad.

The incident occurred in the remit of the Sharifabad police station. A duty officer there said that the body of the woman, identified 70-year-old Naseem Bano, was found in flat 41, block A of Al-Azam Square.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. The victim was alone in the flat, police said.

Till the filing of this report, police were questioning the neighbours to trace relatives of the dead woman.

In another incident in the remit of the same police station of Sharifabad, a man killed his father-in-law over some domestic dispute.

Police said Abdul Wahid opened fire on his father-in-law, Mohammad Essa, and escaped.

The victim was rushed to ASH, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Firefighter electrocuted

A firefighter died from an electric shock on early Sunday morning in the Defence Housing Authority in the line of duty in the limits of the Darakhshan police station.

Police said 35-year-old Abdul Aziz, son of Mohammad Sharif, received an electric shock and died on the spot while trying to douse a fire at King Bakers and Sweet Shop situated on Khayaban-i-Shahbaz, DHA.

The body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities and later handed over to the victim’s family.

Man drowns

A young man drowned in the sea during a picnic trip on Sunday.

Police said the incident occurred on the Hawkesbay beach, where 30-year-old Iqrar was swept away by a strong current. The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities.

The victim was a resident of Korangi and had gone to the beach with friends for a picnic.
