LAHORE, May 16: The Insaaf Students Federation and Islami Jamiat Tulaba activists on Monday clashed at University of Education, leaving a number of activists from both sides injured.

The ISF had set up a camp to offer federation's membership to students. Its activists continued registering students as members from 9.30am to around 1.30pm, when a clash among workers of both organisations took place.

Activists from both sides blamed each other for instigation that led to the clash. As many as four ISF members were seriously injured and the Rescue 1122 shifted them to Jinnah Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Township police rounded up some 25 activists of both organisations. Leaders of both the groups visited the police station and were holding negotiations with the SHO till the filing of the report at 11pm.

ISF spokesman Musa Ghaznavi said the camp was functioning smoothly and it had registered around 100 members, when IJT activists armed with clubs and hockeys came and attacked. He alleged that the IJT men also pelted their members with empty soft drink bottles.

“The Jamiat activists injured 10 ISF members, while Gulrez, Umer, Sabeehul Hassan and Asifa sustained serious injuries. They are still under treatment at Jinnah Hospital,” he said.

He claimed that the ISF men got 11 Jamiat members arrested, who had gone inside university hostels.

Asifa, who was in hospital, said the IJT activists had attacked the membership camp and injured students with hockeys and empty bottles.

The IJT spokesman, however, claimed that a large number of outsiders had tried to enter the University of Education campus and were stopped by UoE guards and students. He alleged that the outsiders thrashed university students with iron rods and hockeys and left some 15 students injured.

He said the students later staged a protest demonstration and the varsity administration called police, which took some 20 'hooligans' into custody.

Lahore IJT acting Nazim Syed Mudassar Ahmad Shah strongly condemned, what he called, the hooliganism in UoE by outsiders. He also criticised the university administration for its failure in protecting students from outsiders.

Mudassar Shah demanded that the police release IJT members and let wounded members get medical check-up from the hospital.

ISF Punjab president Farrukh Habib, ISF Lahore president Muhammad Usman, secretary-general Saqib Sindhu and others came to the university soon after the incident and vowed that no one could intimidate them through violence and hooliganism. They demanded that the police register a case against the IJT activists.
