Two cousins drown

KOHAT, May 16: Two young tribesmen were drowned while taking bath in a lake near Bilitang during picnic on Monday.

Gul Nawaz, 18, Adil Nawaz, 21, and Wazir Akbar, 20, residents of Sheraki village of Darra Adam Khel had come to Bado Ziarat in Kohat on picnic. They jumped into the lake to beat the heat but drowned.

The volunteers pulled out three of them after hectic efforts. By the time they were rescued the cousins Gul Nawaz and Adil Nawaz had died while Wazir Akbar was shifted to hospital in serious condition. The bodies were handed over to relatives. — Correspondent

Man kills brother

SWABI, May 16: A man allegedly killed his brother over some domestic issue at Ismalia village here on Monday, said police. Registering FIR, Gul Bacha said his two sons clashed over some trivial issue and opened fire over each other. As a result, his son Riaz Khan was killed. He nominated his other son, Fayaz Khan, in the case. Sources said the deceased had got released from jail a few days ago. — Correspondent

Violation of rules

PESHAWAR, May 16: Town-I contractors have welcomed the issuance of a notification by the government canceling award of contracts to selected contractors to collect tax on property, water and building control, in violation of rules.

Speaking at a news conference at press club on Monday, Town-I contractors association president, Haji Mohammad Yousaf, alleged the town municipal officer had avoided open bidding on the contracts and awarded these to selected contractors without following the rules.

The TMO, he alleged, was a corrupt person who ignored deserved contractors, forcing them to stage protest demonstration.

However, he said, Senior Minister for Local Government Bashir Ahmad Bilaur issued cancellation orders and directed for open bid. — Bureau Report

Man found dead

MANSEHRA, May 16: A watchman of a government girls higher secondary school was found dead in Oghi on Monday morning.

The killing was exposed when the students and teachers reached the school and found the main gate closed. They informed the principal about the matter.

When the police broke the gate of the school they found Munzoor Ahmad, the guard, lying in a pool of blood. The police launched inquiry after lodging FIR. — Correspondent

Constable suspended

KOHAT, May 16: The district police officer on Monday suspended a constable for injuring a doctor during medical check up in KDA hospital.

The KDA town police said constable Zubair went for blood pressure check up and exchanged hot words with the duty doctor Musarrat Ali. He caused serious injuries to the doctor by hitting him with the ECG machine in the head.

The case was reported to the officers who suspended him immediately and sent him to the lock up of the police lines. A departmental inquiry has been launched against the accused. — Correspondent

Rally in favour of army

PESHAWAR, May 16: Residents of various localities of Peshawar on Monday took out a procession at Sher Shah Suri Road against drone attacks and in favour of Pak Army. They shouted against those trying to defame the security forces.

The rally was organised by an NGO Pakistan Patriotic Movement (PPM) and the participants marched from Saddar to the Cantonment Railway Station.

The participants were holding banners and placards inscribed with slogans in favour of the security forces and against the US.

A participant, Abdur Rasheed Yousufzai, told media persons that US had started defaming Pakistani security forces through an organised conspiracy to weaken foundations of the country.

The negative propaganda, he said was aimed at creating a gap between ‘our army and civilians so that foreign forces could exploit our weaknesses’. — Bureau Report

Polishing precious stones

PESHAWAR, May 16: Gems and Geological Institute of Pakistan has emphasised upon the businessmen to focus on maintenance or quality of their products to boost exports.

Speaking at a meeting of the businessmen here on Monday, the GGIP chairman Ziaul Haq Sarhadi said in different countries the businessmen of precious stones had started use of calibrating machines to increase their clientage.

In this age of modern know-how, he said the people loved to purchase well-polished stones with finest cutting, adding, such products could only be prepared with quality machines.

A senior instructor, Abdul Malik, demonstrated by polishing some stones with the calibrating machine and informed the participants about its use also. He also asked the participants to get training of latest machines to make their products more valuable.—Bureau Report

Eco-marathon

SWABI, May 16: Three teams of the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology have been selected to participate in the ‘Shell Eco-Marathon Asia’ to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from July 6 to 9, said Jehangir Bashar, Rector of the Institute, while talking to media persons about the mega event here on Monday.

He said the main objective of marathon was to encourage students to learn about new developments and apply practical solutions that can help them play their due role in meeting the ever-increasing energy challenges across the world, especially in developing countries.

A total of 121 teams, including 20 from across Pakistan, have confirmed their participation in the Kuala Lumpur Eco-Marathon. — Correspondent

Protest against US, Israel

PESHAWAR, May 16: The Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) on Monday held a rally at Sher Shah Suri Road against Israel suspending traffic for quite some time.

The protesters set on fire tyres and American flag and chanted slogans against US and Israel for subjugating Palestinians. They demanded of Israel to vacate the land of Muslims.

The demonstrators were led by ISO leader Owaisul Hassan. Speaking on the occasion, he said Israelis had killed many innocent people but the Arab countries had kept a mum over the bloodshed. The Saudi government, he said was supporting the Americans instead of taking firm stand in favour of the oppressed people. The ISO leader asked the government to change its foreign policy. — Bureau Report

Weapons seized

PESHAWAR, May 16: Police claimed on Monday to have seized arms and ammunitions and arrested the accused.

A police spokesman said weapons had been recovered during a raid at a godown in limits of Paharipura police station.

The seized weapons include 70 repeaters, 70 rifles and 150 chargers. The accused identified as Said Jalal of Afghanistan was arrested on the spot. The weapons had been dumped in a goods godown.—Bureau Report
